The study focuses on the increasing public health issue of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) strains in Mexico, highlighting the need for effective antibiotic policies due to rising resistance.
It aims to assess the prevalence of ESBL (Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase) and non-ESBL KP strains, along with their susceptibility to various antimicrobials in patients with healthcare-associated infections at a cardiology hospital.
Results from 2020 to 2023 showed that 9.5% of HAI cases were KP, with 49% being ESBL. The study found good sensitivity of both types to key antibiotics, emphasizing the importance of monitoring resistance to guide appropriate treatment decisions.
