Drug dosing according to renal function is a globally accepted practice whose main purpose is to avoid drug associated toxicity when renal clearance is decreased. Renal function is usually estimated based on creatinine clearance or an estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) obtained from one of the available equations based on serum biomarkers. In this review we will analyze the different available methods to adjust the dose of drugs based on GFR, with emphasis on their comparative performance for this objective.

Some gene polymorphisms have been previously associated individually with tacrolimus efficacy and toxicity, but no long-term study to determine the role of pharmacogene variants in the clinical evolution of liver-transplanted patients has been addressed so far. In the present work, we analyzed the relation between highly-evidenced genetic polymorphisms located in relevant pharmacogenes and the risk of suffering premature death and other comorbidities such as cancer, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, graft rejection, infections and nephrotoxicities in a cohort of 87 patients (8 were excluded due to early loss of follow-up) transplanted at Hospital La Fe in Valencia (Spain) during a 12-year follow-up. Employing a logistic regression model with false discovery rate penalization and Kaplan-Meier analyses, we observed significant association between survival rates and metabolizer genes.

Background: The US military has prioritized battlefield hemorrhage control. Researchers credit tourniquet use, and a novel trauma care training program, with saving 1000-2000 lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Stop the Bleed campaign translates these lessons learned to the public.

Objective: To determine high-school students' ability to learn hemorrhage control skills and knowledge via 3 educational modalities.

Background: Trauma is the leading cause of death for young Americans, and there are calls to teach children about hemorrhage control. However, little is known about adolescents' ability to perform hemorrhage control, and the ideal way(s) to teach them.

Objectives: To describe the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative characteristics of patients with left-sided heart valve disease treated in the thoracic and cardiovascular surgery service of a national reference hospital; as well as to describe the occurrence of thromboembolic and bleeding events in these patients.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was carried out, which included 185 patients who underwert surgery between 1999 and 2006 at the Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo (Lima, Peru). The patients were divided into 4 groups: patients with mitral commissurotomy; with aortic valve replacement; with mitral valve replacement and with double valve replacement.

Objective: A meta-analysis was carried out of published studies on the effect of the CYP3A5 6986A>G polymorphism in liver donors and transplant recipients on tacrolimus pharmacokinetics.

Methods: Cohort studies that evaluated the relationship between the CYP3A5 polymorphism in liver donors and transplant recipients and tacrolimus, trough blood concentration normalized for the daily dose (C) per kilogram body weight (D) (C/D, ng/ml/mg/kg/day) up to 1 year after transplantation, were included. Data were not restricted by patient age or the language or journal of publication.

Efficient RNA isolation is a prerequisite for gene expression studies and it has an increasingly important role in the study of plant-fungal pathogen interactions. However, RNA isolation is difficult in filamentous fungi. These organisms are notorious for their rigid cell walls and the presence of high levels of carbohydrates, excreted from the fungal cells during submerged growth, which interferes with the extraction procedures.
