Protein contact dermatitis--case report.

Protein contact dermatitis is a skin condition not well known and underdiagnosed by dermatologists, resulting from an IgE-mediated allergic reaction. Clinically it presents as a chronic hand and/or forearms eczema of occupational origin, especially in professionals who work as food handlers. Epicutaneous tests are negative, and to diagnose this condition it is necessary to perform immediate-type allergy tests.

Facial contact dermatitis and the irritant potential of mobile phone screens.

A teenager with atopic dermatitis presented with a 12-month history of recurrent, pruritic, round and polygonal patches on her face. Patch tests using the European standard series (including nickel, chromium, and cobalt chloride), a plastic and glue series of allergens, polyester components, and personal and environmental products in contact with the patient were conducted. For the patient and 3 of 14 healthy volunteers, positive reactions were observed to the patient's mobile phone touchscreen (TS), an extract solution from the TS, and a non-TS phone of another brand.

Development and validation of a questionnaire on 'Satisfaction with dermatological treatment of hand eczema' (DermaSat).

Objective: To develop a self-administered short questionnaire to assess patient satisfaction with medical treatment for hand eczema (dermatitis) with good psychometric properties.

Method: The content of the questionnaire was determined on the basis of clinical consultation with groups of patients, from studying the existing instruments, and from discussions with a panel of seven experts. A first draft version containing 38 items organised in six dimensions was tested on a pilot sample of patients to assess its legibility.

Sensitization to acrylates in varnishes.

Varnishes are liquid products that solidify when exposed to air. They are used to cover, protect, and embellish surfaces. Varnishes contain agglutinants and volatile solvents.

[Aquagenic syringeal acrokeratoderma. Presentation of two cases].

Aquagenic syringeal acrokeratoderma is an infrequently described acquired, transitory keratoderma that is exacerbated when the palms and/or soles are immersed in water. It manifests as whitish or yellowish flattened, translucent papules and plaques, located in areas of pressure or trauma on the palms and/or soles. Involvement is usually bilateral.

[Brief history of Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas].

Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas was founded by Juan de Azúa in May 1909. The birth of the journal coincided with the founding of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, then known as the Spanish Society of Dermatology and Syphiligraphy, and it is this organization's official publication. Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas gradually became established, until the year 1936, when its publication was interrupted for 14 months at the start of the Spanish Civil War.

Contact allergy to a cocobolo bracelet.

Tropical woods are highly valued because of their strength, hardness, and resistance to moisture. These characteristics make them easy to work with and extremely durable, and that is why they have been used in the manufacture of wooden jewelry, musical instruments, furniture, and handles of many different objects. We present a case of a 44-year-old man who developed pruritus, erythema, and blistering around his right wrist, corresponding exactly to the area where he had worn a wooden bracelet.

Contact dermatitis in hairdressers, 10 years later: patch-test results in 300 hairdressers (1994 to 2003) and comparison with previous study.

Background: In the last 20 years, the hairdressing profession has undergone important modifications, mainly because of a change in the substances and techniques used and improved occupational education.

Objective: To evaluate the modifications in the hairdressing profession and its actual risk of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD).

Methods: We studied all 300 hairdressers seen in our department from 1994 to 2003 and compared the results with those of a previous study of 379 hairdressers who attended our department from 1980 to 1993.

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from antioxidant amines in a dental technician.

We describe an 18-year-old dental technician who presented with dry hyperkeratotic lesions on his left palm that were limited to an area that was in contact with a container in which he had prepared the molds for a dental prosthesis. On patch testing, he had a positive reaction to black rubber mix and its components N-cyclohexyl-N'-phenyl-4-phenylenediamine, N,N'-diphenyl-4-phenylenediamine, and N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl-4-phenylenediamine, as well as to a piece of the rubber container. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of a piece of the rubber container confirmed the presence of the para-phenylenediamine mix.

Allergic contact urticaria from natural rubber latex in healthcare and non-healthcare workers.

To compare the prevalence of natural rubber latex (NRL) sensitization and allergic contact urticaria from NRL in healthcare and non-healthcare workers, we studied all 1171 patients who attended our clinic during 2001 and 2002. Prick testing for NRL and patch testing with European standard series were performed in all patients and an additional rubber series in those who had contact with rubber. Specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels against NRL and tropical fruits were measured when prick testing was positive.

Dermatitis artefacta?

A 35-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of intensely pruritic excoriated and crusted linear lesions on the dorsa of the left hand and left forearm (Fig 1). The patient had worked in construction for 2 years, and his job consisted mainly in covering the facades of buildings with cement. The patient was right-handed and used a black rubber glove as a protective measure only on his left hand (Fig 2).
