Knowledge of cerebral structure and function in its modern form can be traced to the neurone doctrine based largely on the work of Santiago Ramón y Cajal [1852-1934] and his lifelong exploitation of the Golgi method. Cajal openly acknowledged his debt to the neuropsychiatrist Luis Simarro Lacabra [1851-1921] who introduced him to the method in 1887, and recalled that the sight of the silver-impregnated nerve cells was the turning point which led him to abandon general anatomy and concentrate on neurohistology. Simarro, who dissipated his free time in trying to improve not only the scientific but also the political world around him, was able to produce exciting Golgi preparations of the cerebral cortex after he returned from voluntary exile in Paris from 1880 to 1885.

Food products can be possible vectors of the agent responsible for cholera epidemics, because some of these products allow Vibrio cholerae O1 to develop to concentrations above the dangerous level. This study deals with the behaviour of essential oils, natural and concentrated lemon juice and fresh and dehydrated lemon peel against V. cholerae O1 biotype Eltor serotype Inaba tox+.

Tucuman is the first lemon exporting province in Argentina and the fourth lemon exporter in the world. The present work was set up to study the survival of Vibrio cholerae O1 Tox+ after application of different chemical products used in the lemon production (from its cultivation until its packing). The following products were studied: copper oxychloride, benomil (a carbamate), active chlorine, sodium-o-phenylphenoate, guazatine (a polyamine mixture), imazalil (an imidazole) and fresh and dehydrated lemon peel.

Sticholysin II (Stn II), a potent cytolytic protein isolated from the sea anemone Stichodactyla helianthus, has been crystallized on lipid monolayers. With Fourier-based methods, a three-dimensional (3D) model of Stn II, up to a resolution of 15 A, has been determined. The two-sided plane group is p22(1)2, with dimensions a = 98 A, b = 196 A.

The chemical and nutritional composition of the aerial parts of Amaranthus muricatus was assessed. This is a wild plant growing well in arid and poor soil, which are not suitable for cereals. The material under study was boiled, dried and ground and then evaluated for chemical, nutritional and antinutritional properties.

The nutritional quality of two wild vegetable species, Kochia scoparia (Ks) and Chenopodium album (Cha) was evaluated and compared with Beta vulgaris var. cicla(chard) (Bv), in order to propose their domestication as alternative protein sources. Chemical percentual analysis (AOAC), gaseous chromatography fatty acid determination, and antinutrient searching (by chemical, enzymatic and immunological method) were performed.

An extraction methodology based on cloud point phase separation of non-ionic surfactants has been developed for the preconcentration of ppb amounts of gadolinium in urine as a prior step to its determination by an absorptiometric procedure. A method based on the formation of complexes with 2-(3,5-dichloro-2-pyridylazo)-5-dimethylaminophenol was used for the extraction of Gd(III) in the surfactant-rich phase of non-ionic surfactant polyethyleneglycolmono-p-nonylphenylether (PONPE 7.5).

The aim of this study was the obtainment of a protein concentrate (PC) from A. mantegazzianus seed powder and the evaluation of its percentual chemical composition, functional properties and biological protein quality. For this purpose, the optimal PC conditions assessed were: pH values for maximal and minimal solubility 11.

Five cases of infant botulism which occurred during the period from May 1995 to May 1996 in San Luis, Argentina, are reported. Infant botulism was confirmed in all patients by isolation of Clostridium botulinum type A from stool culture and by the toxin assay. Toxin was found in the serum of one of them.

From samples of effluent derived from a biological treatment plant of a mayonnaise and margarine producing factory, several bacteria strains presenting high lipolytic activities were isolated. The strain having the highest activity was used for treating a typical final effluent and the results obtained were compared with those achieved with Yarrowia lipolytica and Saccharomycopsis lipolytica strains. The isolated strain showed the highest specific capacity for reducing chemical oxygen demand (COD).

The present research was set up to verify whether the chemical products used in lemon production (from cultivation until packaging) have a bactericidal or a bacteriostatic ability against Vibrio cholerae O1. The studied products were: copper oxychloride, benomil (a carbamate), active chlorine, sodium-o-phenylphenoate, guazatine (a polyamine mixture), imazalil (an imidazole) and lemon peel. The latter was studied with and without treatment using the above mentioned chemicals.

A total of 177 honey samples were examined for Clostridium botulinum, 68 of which were from commercial origin, 8 from small rural producers for family consumption, and the remaining 6 from fractionizing centers in Mendoza and San Luis provinces in Argentina. C. botulinum type A was detected in two samples of rural producer origin (1.

The chemical and nutricional properties of flour from total calf omasum are assessed with the purpose of considering the utilization of a waste product from the meat industry as animal food. The results of the chemical percent analysis showed a high protein content of 78.6 g/100 g, a total lipid amount of 3.

The combination of an improved bacterial desorption method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance and transmission infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and a desorption-leaching device like high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyze bacterial populations (adhering and free bacteria) and surface-oxidized phases (ferric arsenates and elemental sulfur) during the arsenopyrite biooxidation by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The bacterial distribution, the physicochemical composition of the leachate, the evolution of corrosion patterns, and the nature and amount of the surface-oxidized chemical species characterized different behavior for each step of arsenopyrite bioleaching. The first step is characterized by a slow but strong adhesion of bacteria to mineral surfaces, the appearance of a surface phase of elemental sulfur, the weak solubilization of Fe(II), As(III), and As(V), and the presence of the first corrosion patterns, which follow the fragility zones and the crystallographic orientation of mineral grains.

There are different opinions in respect to the main sources in upper gastrointestinal bleeding in hepatic cirrhosis. Some authors claim that ruptured esophageal varices are the cause of most of the hemorrhages. Recently, characteristic lesions have been showed in the gastric mucosa in portal hypertension (congestive gastropathy), and many believe that they are frequently the origin of the bleeding.

We present a case of polymyositis (PM) in a patient with no previous relevant medical history, who had received blood transfusion four years ago during surgery. It could be demonstrated that the patient was HIV infected inspite the fact that he did not belong to any other high risk groups. PM was the clinical presentation form of HIV infection, the patient dying five months later due to a Pneumocystis carinii.
