Slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease; what works?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related progressive dementia, which is increasing in prevalence world-wide. Typically affecting short-term memory at onset, this devastating illness advances to impair all aspects of cognition, as well as non-cognitive domains. Although much effort has been made in recent years to develop disease-modifying treatments, medications which provided promising results in pre-clinical research have so far faltered in human clinical trials.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is by far the most common sporadic neurodegenerative disorder. Clinically it is associated with cognitive and other neuropsychological impairments, and neuropathologically it is distinguished by presence of amyloid-β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Hypertension has been traditionally associated with the etiology of vascular dementia, however, vascular risk factors including hypertension are increasingly being implicated in AD.

Aims: To measure the frequency of advertising of medicines on New Zealand television and to describe the distribution of advertising.

Methods: A stratified random sample of 35 days (577.5 hours) of television was video-recorded, including five free to air channels for each day of the week.
