Article Synopsis
  • The Carnian rocks of the Candelária Sequence in Southern Brazil contain some of the oldest dinosaur fossils, including a newly identified specimen, CAPPA/UFSM 0373.
  • This well-preserved left ilium has been classified as belonging to the Herrerasauria group, showing anatomical similarities with dinosaurs previously found only in North America.
  • The discovery suggests a previously unrecognized diversity of dinosaurs in these Carnian beds, indicating that even fragmentary specimens can provide valuable information about the history of dinosaurs.

Two sets of teeth (diphyodonty) characterise extant mammals but not reptiles, as they generate many replacement sets (polyphyodonty). The transition in long-extinct species from many sets to only two has to date only been reported in Jurassic eucynodonts. Specimens of the Late Triassic brasilodontid eucynodont Brasilodon have provided anatomical and histological data from three lower jaws of different growth stages.
