Background: Low-density neutrophils (LDN) are increased in several inflammatory diseases and may also play a role in the low-grade chronic inflammation associated with obesity. Here we explored their role in obesity, determined their gene signatures, and assessed the effect of bariatric surgery.
Methods: We compared the number, function, and gene expression profiles of circulating LDN in morbidly obese patients (MOP, n=27; body mass index (BMI) > 40 Kg/m) and normal-weight controls (NWC, n=20; BMI < 25 Kg/m) in a case-control study.
Cytokine-driven hyper inflammation has been identified as a critical factor behind poor outcomes in patients severely infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus. Notably, protein ISGylation, a protein conjugated form of Type 1 IFN-inducible ubiquitin-like protein ISG15 (nterferon-timulated ene ), induces cytokine storm (CS) and augments colonic inflammation in colitis-associated colon cancers in mouse models. However, whether ISGylation is increased and causally responsible for CS and hyper inflammation in symptomatic COVID-19 patients is unknown.

Recent evidence suggests that the gut microbiome plays a central role in the progression of cancer, and that imbalances or dysbiosis in the population of commensal microbiota can lead to inflammation and contribute to tumor progression.
