Psychologists' Perspectives on the Psychological Suffering of Refugee Patients in Brazil.

Worldwide there are 79.5 million displaced people, many of which face war, violence, tragic flights and struggles in host countries. Research shows augmented prevalence rates of mental disorders among refugees internationally, but little is known about refugee mental health in Latin American countries.

Psychotherapy with refugees-Supportive and hindering elements.

Globally, nearly 80 million people are forcibly displaced. Being a refugee can impact one's mental health profoundly. Although specific approaches for psychotherapy with refugees have been developed, this study is the first to investigate psychotherapy with refugees in Brazil.

[Co-therapy in intercultural clinical psychology].

Numerous clinicians practicing systemic psychotherapy have recognized the relevance of co-therapy, an intervention model involving at least two clinicians. Intercultural psychology and ethnopsychiatry have been inspired by the principles of co-therapy and have adapted it to the intercultural context. Our objective is to illustrate how co-therapy works in intercultural psychology, as it has been developed by the Specialized Psychological Services for Immigrants and for Refugees (SAPSIR).

[Recognizing difference: the challenge of ethnopsychiatry].

Recognizing difference of the Other is the basis of legitimacy of ethnopsychiatry that is necessarily multiple, changing, and itself bearing subtleties and variations. It is from their practice at the Service d'aide psychologique spécialisée aux immigrants et réfugiés (SAPSIR), that the authors propose another perspective of this discipline taking into account of course, the cultural and psychological dimension of the individual; they also consider existential and humanistic universals such as the need of giving meaning, of continuity of the self and coherence as well as the various dimensions of identity. Their clinical approach, respectful of the principles of ethnopsychiatry, is structured around three axis : work on links, work on different dimensions of identity, work on coherence and meaning of situations experienced.
