Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the genetic links between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), highlighting a significant correlation that suggests PTSD can increase the risk of CVD events such as heart attacks or strokes.
  • - Utilizing a large biobank with over 36,000 participants, researchers combined summary statistics from previous studies to analyze genetic data, finding strong genetic overlaps and suggesting a potential causal relationship from PTSD to hypertension.
  • - Results also showed that genetic factors associated with PTSD can predict diagnostic status, and analyses revealed specific pathways related to brain structure and immune signaling that contribute to the shared risk between PTSD and CVD.

Childhood maltreatment, occurring in up to 20-30% of the population, remains far too common, and incorporates a range of active and passive factors, from abuse, to neglect, to the impacts of broader structural and systemic adversity. Despite the effects of childhood maltreatment and adversity on a wide range of adult physical and psychological negative outcomes, not all individuals respond similarly. Understanding the differential biological mechanisms contributing to risk vs.

Prior observational studies have suggested that medications targeting the renin-angiotensin system, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), may be associated with decreased PTSD symptoms. Given known sex differences in PTSD prevalence and cardiovascular disease, here we tested whether the effects of ACE-I/ARB status on PTSD differ by sex. We also expanded these observations with replication analyses in a large biorepository database.

Organisms may internally or behaviorally regulate their body temperatures or conform to the ambient air temperatures. Previous evidence is mixed on whether wing pigmentation influences thermoregulation in various odonates. We investigated the thermal response of sympatric North American and with a thermal imaging study across a 25°C ambient temperature range.
