Norovirus (NoV), sapovirus (SaV) and human astrovirus (HAstV) are viral pathogens that are associated with outbreaks and sporadic cases of gastroenteritis. However, little is known about the occurrence of these pathogens in relatively isolated communities, such as the remnants of African-descendant villages ("Quilombola"). The objective of this study was the frequency determination of these viruses in children under 10 years, with and without gastroenteritis, from a "Quilombola" Community, Northern Brazil.

We provide an extensive characterization of the modulation by p-nitrophenylphosphate, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, K(+), Rb⁺, NH(4)(+) and pH of gill microsomal K⁺-phosphatase activity in the posterior gills of Callinectes ornatus acclimated to low salinity (21‰). The synergistic stimulation by K⁺ and NH(4)(+) of the K⁺-phosphatase activity is a novel finding, and may constitute a species-specific feature of K(+)/NH(4)(+) interplay that regulates crustacean gill (Na⁺, K⁺)-ATPase activity. p-Nitrophenylphosphate was hydrolyzed at a maximum rate (V) of 69.

Doxylamine succinate, an H(1)-antihistamine drug, is commonly used as sleep-inducing agent as well as therapy for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. At usual doses, it may cause impairment of cognitive and psychomotor performance, anticholinergic effects, agitation and postural hypotension. Besides, since this drug is frequently involved in either accidental or intentional overdoses, it seems relevant to bear in mind other possible toxic effects.

This study addresses mental health and, based on a conceptual review, offers considerations on the management of deinstitutionalization processes regarding individuals interned in long-stay psychiatric institutions. Elements concerning asylum formation and logic are discussed, along with the mechanisms necessary for the effective change in paradigm and practices, with deinstitutionalization and psychosocial rehabilitation as the core issues. Reflections are offered regarding management actions committed to the psychosocial model, linking such actions to the application of the components of care and going beyond the articulation of the tools of mental health policy.

Article Synopsis
  • A genome-wide association study was conducted on 783 individuals of European ancestry who experienced drug-induced liver injury (DILI) from over 200 drugs, aiming to identify heritable genetic factors.
  • Despite analyzing genetic data from these DILI patients and comparing them to controls, no genome-wide significant associations were found, including in known risk regions related to specific drugs.
  • A trend was observed linking hepatocellular DILI to a genetic variant near the STAT4 gene, suggesting immune system involvement, but no strong genetic determinants were identified overall, indicating drug-specific genetic factors or rare variations may play a larger role.

Background: Studies in South-East Asia have suggested that early diagnosis and treatment with artesunate (AS) and mefloquine (MQ) combination therapy may reduce the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria and the progression of MQ resistance.

Methods: The effectiveness of a fixed-dose combination of AS and MQ (ASMQ) in reducing malaria transmission was tested in isolated communities of the Juruá valley in the Amazon region.Priority municipalities within the Brazilian Legal Amazon area were selected according to pre-specified criteria.

In this paper we discuss the consensus view on the use of qualifying biomarkers in drug safety, raised within the frame of the XXIV meeting of the Spanish Society of Clinical Pharmacology held in Málaga (Spain) in October, 2011. The widespread use of biomarkers as surrogate endpoints is a goal that scientists have long been pursuing. Thirty years ago, when molecular pharmacogenomics evolved, we anticipated that these genetic biomarkers would soon obviate the routine use of drug therapies in a way that patients should adapt to the therapy rather than the opposite.

Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a chronic, infectious disease caused by protozoa of the genus leishmania. The incidence of this disease is high in Brazil, with 19,746 new cases having been detected in 2008. The presence of amastigotes in the cytoplasm of histiocytes constitutes diagnosis of the disease; however, their presence is rarely found in late lesions, making histological diagnosis difficult.

Noroviruses (NoVs) are major agents of gastroenteritis outbreaks and hospitalization worldwide. This study evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of the commercially available third-generation RIDASCREEN® Norovirus Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) kit in comparison to the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect NoVs in hospitalized children with gastroenteritis. An agreement of 88% (81/92) was observed when comparing EIA with RT-PCR.

We investigated the effect of the exogenous polyamines spermine, spermidine and putrescine on modulation by ATP, K⁺, Na⁺, NH₄⁺ and Mg²⁺ and on inhibition by ouabain of posterior gill microsomal Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase activity in the blue crab, Callinectes ornatus, acclimated to a dilute medium (21‰ salinity). This is the first kinetic demonstration of competition between spermine and spermidine for the cation sites of a crustacean Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase. Polyamine inhibition is enhanced at low cation concentrations: spermidine almost completely inhibited total ATPase activity, while spermine inhibition attained 58%; putrescine had a negligible effect on Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase activity.

Purpose: Previous publications have linked Herbalife® products to hepatotoxicity. The identification of earlier cases in which the culprit agent could not be established raised the hypothesis of a possible contamination of some specific batches of Herbalife products.

Methods: We searched the Spanish Pharmacovigilance Centres' database of adverse reactions for reports of liver injury associated with the use of Herbalife products from 2003, when the first case was submitted, through September 2010.

Unlabelled: Distinguishing drug-induced liver injury (DILI) from idiopathic autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) can be challenging. We performed a standardized histologic evaluation to explore potential hallmarks to differentiate AIH versus DILI. Biopsies from patients with clinically well-characterized DILI [n = 35, including 19 hepatocellular injury (HC) and 16 cholestatic/mixed injury (CS)] and AIH (n = 28) were evaluated for Ishak scores, prominent inflammatory cell types in portal and intra-acinar areas, the presence or absence of emperipolesis, rosette formation, and cholestasis in a blinded fashion by four experienced hepatopathologists.

Gunshot residue (GSR) are solid particles produced when a firearm is discharged, and its detection is important evidence in forensic investigations. Currently, scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) is the standard technique adopted for the analysis and identification of GSR; however, this methodology is inefficient for lead-free ammunition. Herein, we report the inclusion of high photoluminescent metal-organic frameworks in ammunition to allow for the visual detection of GSR.
