Background: Odontogenic lesions constitute a heterogeneous group of lesions. CLIC4 protein regulates different cellular processes, including epithelial-mesenchymal transition and fibroblast-myofibroblast transdifferentiation. This study analyzed CLIC4, E-cadherin, Vimentin, and α-SMA immunoexpression in epithelial odontogenic lesions that exhibit different biological behavior.

Objective: To analyze the expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Cyclin D1, and transcription factor SOX2 in the odontogenic epithelium evaluating the cell cycle control and cystic expansion.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study including 40 cases, 20 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), 10 botryoid odontogenic cysts (BOC), and 10 glandular odontogenic cysts (GOC).
Langerhans cells (LCs) play important roles in cell-mediated immune reactions, as well as in the pathogenesis of periapical lesions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of LCs in the proliferative epithelium of radicular cysts (RCs) and the release of the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) associated with epithelial thickness. Thirty cases of RCs and 30 cases of residual RCs were randomly selected.

Nevertheless, the global shrimp productions are constantly threatened by disease outbreaks, mainly triggered by rapidly disseminating viruses. Infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) is one of these epizootic agents affecting shrimp production in Brazil, of which no treatment exists.

The study's purpose was to identify predictive factors of voiding dysfunction after a retropubic MUT procedure.
Methods: This was a retrospective study of 100 patients who underwent only a retropubic MUT procedure between January 2010 and December 2011.
Purpose: Angiogenesis and tumor invasion are complex processes that are mediated by various proteins, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-α) and the matrix-degrading enzymes metalloproteinase-2 and -9 (MMP-2, MMP-9). The aim of this study was to determine what roles MMP-2, MMP-9, and VEGF-α play in colorectal cancer (CRC) by correlating their expression levels with the cancer TNM stage, modified Dukes criteria, degree of cell differentiation, and long-term patient survival.
Methods: The present series consisted of tissue samples obtained from 180 patients who had undergone large bowel resection during 1995 and 2005 at the Luis Antonio Hospital.
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease related to tooth loss in adults. Infliximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody against TNF-α and is prescribed for the treatment of systemic inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to investigate the role of infliximab on experimental periodontal disease (EPD).

Periodontal diseases are initiated primarily by Gram-negative, tooth-associated microbial biofilms that elicit a host response that causes osseous and soft tissue destruction. Carvedilol is a β-blocker used as a multifunctional neurohormonal antagonist that has been shown to act not only as an anti-oxidant but also as an anti-inflammatory drug. This study evaluated whether Carvedilol exerted a protective role against ligature-induced periodontitis in a rat model and defined how Carvedilol affected metalloproteinases and RANKL/RANK/OPG expression in the context of bone remodeling.

In this study we addressed the role of the novel apolipoprotein E (ApoE) COG 133 mimetic peptide in 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-challenged Swiss mice and IEC-6 cell monolayers. Experiments were also conducted in C57BL6J ApoE knock-out mice to assess the effects of apoE peptide treatment.

The formation, differentiation and activity of osteoclasts are regulated by these proteins. To clarify the roles of osteoclast regulatory factors in cystic expansion of odontogenic cysts, expression of these proteins were analysed in radicular and dentigerous cysts.

This class of compounds greatly contributes to the chemotaxonomic characterization of plants of this genus, and it has important medical uses and shows toxic effects. This review describes 186 tropane alkaloids in the 35 species of Erythroxylum distributed worldwide.

Our group has investigated the effect of high doses of oral vitamin A on early childhood diarrhea in our prospective community-based studies from Northeast Brazil and found a beneficial role in reducing the mean duration but not incidence of diarrheal episodes. In this study, we explored the role of retinol supplementation in intestinal cell lines following Clostridium difficile toxin A (TxA) challenge.
