The PCM (phase contrast microscopy) method for asbestos counting needs special sample treatments, hence it is time consuming and rather expensive. As an alternative, we implemented a deep learning procedure on images directly acquired from the untreated airborne samples using standard Mixed Cellulose Ester (MCE) filters. Several samples with a mix of chrysotile and crocidolite with different concentration loads have been prepared.

In this paper we describe the results obtained with a novel method to prepare depositions of asbestos fibres for toxicological tests . The technique is based on a micro-dispenser, working as an inkjet printer, able to deposit micro-sized droplets from a suspension of fibres in a liquid medium; we used here a highly evaporating liquid (ethanol) to reduce the experimental time, however other solvents could be used. Both the amount and spatial distribution of fibres on the substrate can be controlled by adjusting the parameters of the micro-dispenser such as deposition area, deposition time, uniformity and volume of the deposited liquid.

The capillary aerosol generator (CAG) is operated with the principal of thermal liquid evaporation through heating of e-liquid in the initial phase, followed by nucleation and condensation regulated through a mixture of airflow to generate aerosols, such as in an electronic cigarette (EC). The CAG is particularly useful in generating aerosols of large volumes in a continuous manner, for instances such as in vivo inhalation toxicology studies, where usage of ECs is not feasible. The thermal effects of generating aerosol from the CAG are similar in terms of temperature applied in an EC, thus allowing investigators to assess the vapors of e-liquids at scale and reproducibility.

Cigarette smoking is one major modifiable risk factor in the development and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular disease. To characterize and compare cigarette smoke (CS)-induced disease endpoints after exposure in either whole-body (WB) or nose-only (NO) exposure systems, we exposed apolipoprotein E-deficient mice to filtered air (Sham) or to the same total particulate matter (TPM) concentration of mainstream smoke from 3R4F reference cigarettes in NO or WB exposure chambers (EC) for 2 months. At matching TPM concentrations, we observed similar concentrations of carbon monoxide, acetaldehyde, and acrolein, but higher concentrations of nicotine and formaldehyde in NOEC than in WBEC.

Aerosol dosimetry estimates for mouse strains used as models for human disease are not available, primarily because of the lack of tracheobronchial airway morphometry data. By using micro-CT scans of in-situ prepared lung casts, tracheobronchial airway morphometry for four strains of mice were obtained: Balb/c, AJ, C57BL/6, and Apoe . The automated tracheobronchial airway morphometry algorithms for airway length and diameter were successfully verified against previously published manual and automated tracheobronchial airway morphometry data derived from two identical in-situ Balb/c mouse lung casts.

Chiral surfaces are of growing interest for enantioselective adsorption and reactions. While metal surfaces can be prepared with a wide range of chiral surface orientations, chiral oxide surface preparation is more challenging. We demonstrate the chirality of a metal surface can be used to direct the homochiral growth of a thin film chiral oxide.

In nature, asbestos is often associated with minerals and other non-asbestiform morphologies thought to be harmless, but not much is known about the potential toxic effects of these phases. Therefore, the characterization of natural assemblages should not be limited to asbestos fibers only. This paper combines a multi-analytical characterization of asbestos from Valmalenco (Italy) with data from dissolution experiments conducted in a simulated interstitial lung fluid (Gamble's solution), and a detailed dimensional study that compares the particle population before and after this interaction.

Background And Objectives: Breast-conserving surgery represents the standard of care for the treatment of small breast cancers. However, there is a population of patients who cannot undergo the standard surgical procedures due to several reasons such as age, performance status, or comorbidity. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility and safety of percutaneous US-guided laser ablation for unresectable unifocal breast cancer (BC).

Background: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally-invasive surgical technique for patients with paranasal sinus pathology. Surgical bleeding reduces operative field visibility and increases the incidence of serious complications. Epinephrine injection into the nasal mucosa and controlled hypotension are used to minimize bleeding.

The recent availability of shale gas has led to a renewed interest in C-H bond activation as the first step towards the synthesis of fuels and fine chemicals. Heterogeneous catalysts based on Ni and Pt can perform this chemistry, but deactivate easily due to coke formation. Cu-based catalysts are not practical due to high C-H activation barriers, but their weaker binding to adsorbates offers resilience to coking.

The autocatalytic decomposition of tartaric acid on Cu(111) exhibits unique kinetics, which are linked to a hexagonal surface structure adopted at high coverage. The chirality imposed on the surface by tartaric acid throughout the explosion process is presented, and the hexagonal structure shows promise as a chiral template for enantiospecific surface chemistry.

Platinum catalysts are extensively used in the chemical industry and as electrocatalysts in fuel cells. Pt is notorious for its sensitivity to poisoning by strong CO adsorption. Here we demonstrate that the single-atom alloy (SAA) strategy applied to Pt reduces the binding strength of CO while maintaining catalytic performance.

Key descriptors in hydrogenation catalysis are the nature of the active sites for H2 activation and the adsorption strength of H atoms to the surface. Using atomically resolved model systems of dilute Pd-Au surface alloys and density functional theory calculations, we determine key aspects of H2 activation, diffusion, and desorption. Pd monomers in a Au(111) surface catalyze the dissociative adsorption of H2 at temperatures as low as 85 K, a process previously expected to require contiguous Pd sites.

Two-dimensional radioactive (125)I monolayers are a recent development that combines the fields of radiochemistry and nanoscience. These Au-supported monolayers show great promise for understanding the local interaction of radiation with 2D molecular layers, offer different directions for surface patterning, and enhance the emission of chemically and biologically relevant low-energy electrons. However, the elemental composition of these monolayers is in constant flux due to the nuclear transmutation of (125)I to (125)Te, and their precise composition and stability under ambient conditions has yet to be elucidated.

Platinum is ubiquitous in the production sectors of chemicals and fuels; however, its scarcity in nature and high price will limit future proliferation of platinum-catalysed reactions. One promising approach to conserve platinum involves understanding the smallest number of platinum atoms needed to catalyse a reaction, then designing catalysts with the minimal platinum ensembles. Here we design and test a new generation of platinum-copper nanoparticle catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene,, an industrially important reaction.

High-energy radiation has been used for decades; however, the role of low-energy electrons created during irradiation has only recently begun to be appreciated. Low-energy electrons are the most important component of radiation damage in biological environments because they have subcellular ranges, interact destructively with chemical bonds, and are the most abundant product of ionizing particles in tissue. However, methods for generating them locally without external stimulation do not exist.

Cat-like carnivorous mammals represent a relatively homogeneous group of species whose morphology appears constrained by exclusive adaptations for meat eating. We present the most comprehensive data set of extant and extinct cat-like species to test for evolutionary transformations in size, shape and mechanical performance, that is, von Mises stress and surface traction, of the mandible. Size and shape were both quantified by means of geometric morphometrics, whereas mechanical performance was assessed applying finite element models to 2D geometry of the mandible.

Controlling the self-assembly of thiophene-containing molecules and polymers requires a strong fundamental understanding of the relationship between molecular features and structure-directing forces. Here, the effects of ring-substitution position on the two-dimensional self-assembly of monosubstituted thiophenes at the phenyloctane/HOPG interface are studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The influence of π···π-stacking, hydrogen-bonding, and alkyl-chain interactions are explored computationally.
