Neuromuscular activation analysis of the trunk muscles during hippotherapy sessions.

Introduction: Hippotherapy allows the development of affective, sensory, motor, and cognitive areas, besides providing the practitioner with several movements and stimuli necessary for therapeutic progress. However, there is a limited amount of scientific evidence regarding the suitability of the mount material, mount type, and hippotherapy session duration, as well as regarding the activation of specific muscle groups during the practice and its applicability to activities of daily living.

Objective: This study aimed to study the neuromuscular activation behavior of the iliocostalis, longissimus, multifidus, and upper trapezius muscles of children during four hippotherapy session time points using a functional task.

Oxidative stress markers in cognitively intact patients with diabetic neuropathy.

Various forms of vascular injury are frequently associated with type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Macro-angiopathy has alarming signs and symptoms such as those seen with stroke or heart attack, however the presentation of small vessel disease is generally more subtle and therefore usually unnoticed for a long period of time. While it may affect any organ, complications involving the nervous system such as diabetic poly-neuropathy (DPN) are especially debilitating, and it may also be a risk factor for other brain disorders such as dementia.

Cardiac tamponade by peripherally inserted central catheter in preterm infants: role of bedside ultrasonography and therapeutic approach.

Objective: to determine the incidence of pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade in preterm infants in a pediatric intensive care unit, with emphasis on the relationship between pericardial effusion and peripherally inserted central catheter, and to evaluate the role of bedside ultrasound in approaching these cases.

Methods: we conducted a retrospective analysis of patients admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit between July 2014 and December 2016, who presented pericardial effusion with hemodynamic repercussion, evaluated by ultrasonography.

Results: we studied 426 patients admitted to the five beds of the neonatal unit.

A Brazilian original pedagogical approach to the teaching of neurology.

Unlabelled: The two-arm Clinical Decisions/Diagnostic Workshop (CD/DW) approach to undergraduate medical education has been successfully used in Brazil.

Objective: Present the CD/DW approach to the teaching of stroke, with the results of its pre-experimental application and of a comparative study with the traditional lecture-case discussion approach.

Method: Application of two questionnaires (opinion and Knowledge-Attitudes-Perceptions-KAP) to investigate the non-inferiority of the CD/DW approach.
