This observation reports the case of an occupational allergic asthma in a laboratory technician, caused by exposure to formaldehyde. She experienced feelings of discomfort during low exposure, below the regulatory exposure thresholds. Sent to occupational medicine, signs of an asthma attack were noted by the doctor.

How emergency departments are responding to the opioid crisis: Results from a statewide survey in Kentucky.

Objective: There is a rising effort for hospital emergency departments (EDs) to offer and expand substance use disorder (SUD) services. This state-wide evaluation studies SUD services offered along the continuum of implementation across Kentucky's EDs to inform future state efforts to build ED bridge programs.

Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study using an online survey of all Kentucky Emergency Department Directors between January and May of 2023.

Background: Motion sickness, is the onset of a series of clinical signs when travelling in a means of locomotion. Boats are the most common source of kinetosis, causing seasickness. Although this condition is often benign, it can severely affect the quality of life of seafarers, as well as the quality of their work.

Aggression, psychological violence and sexual harassment in seafarers in France.

Background: In a working environment that is predominantly male, very tough physically, with a difficult working environment, occupational exposures and working, verbal and physical aggression can be more frequent than in other sectors. Fishing, merchant shipping and yachting are all sectors where fitness to sail is reassessed every year by doctors in the Seafarers' Health Service. Seafarers are increasingly reporting insulting, violent or sexist behaviour.

A skeleton in a huff: insights in etiologies of osteosclerosis.

A 30-yr-old man developed right lower leg pain and a palpable solid mass. Radiographic imaging revealed a periosteal reaction with an exostotic mass arising from the right distal fibula. Generalized skeletal osteosclerosis with periosteal reaction was discovered on a radiographic skeletal survey.

Vaccinating international seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite their key role in the distribution of essential goods, seafarers were often overlooked in international COVID-19 responses. Border closures isolated them at sea, often for months beyond contract. Distributing vaccines to seafarers was inconsistent and often depended on the creativity of charities and industry and labour stakeholders.

COVID-19 on board a cruise ship: medical management.

Background: First, this analysis was conducted to study a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cluster dynamic on a cruise ship in order to allow the ship physician to anticipate the duration and importance of the contaminations. Secondly, the author tries to find out if the closed environment on board allows specific conclusions about epidemic dynamics and preventative measures.

Materials And Methods: From a personal epidemiological compendium done by himself on board the author analysed different epidemic curves identified on board other ships and compared them to the epidemiologic data from the different COVID-19 contamination waves in France since 2020.

Conventional chondrosarcoma of the rib cage and sternum: clinicopathological and molecular analysis of 27 patients treated at a single institution.

Conventional chondrosarcoma of the chest wall is rare, accounting for 15% of cases. Our purpose was to document clinicopathological, imaging and outcome results from a novel set of chest wall chondrosarcomas, and to analyze for IDH mutations and novel molecular alterations. Gross and microscopic pathology, imaging and clinical charts were reviewed.

Importance: Pathologic complete response (pCR) may be associated with prognosis in patients with soft tissue sarcoma (STS).

Objective: We sought to determine the prognostic significance of pCR on survival outcomes in STS for patients receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CT-RT) (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group [RTOG] 9514) or preoperative image-guided radiotherapy alone (RT, RTOG 0630) and provide a long-term update of RTOG 0630.

Design, Setting, And Participants: RTOG has completed 2 multi-institutional, nonrandomized phase 2 clinical trials for patients with localized STS.

Assessment of mental health and psychosocial factors in French merchant officer cadets.

Background: Several studies have demonstrated the existence of psychological pathologies and psychosocial risks among seafarers, particularly merchant navy officers. To date, there is no study of merchant navy officer cadets. First aims are to assess anxiety and depression disorders, framework, work strain and social support in this population.

Effect of occupational exposure to welding fumes and noise on heart rate variability: An exposed-unexposed study on welders and airport workers' population.

Introduction: Welding fumes (WF) are a complex mixture of gas and particles. Action of occupational exposure to WF on cardiovascular system has been recently studied as for noise.

Research Question: The main objectives of our study are therefore to evaluate the impact of exposure to WF, noise, and combined WF and noise on autonomic nervous system as assessed by heart rate variability (HRV).

Occupational asthma, rhinitis and contact urticaria in a salmon-processing worker.

We report a case of occupational allergy to salmon combining allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergic contact urticaria in a 59-year-old salmon-processing worker. Parvalbumin is the most common allergen, but indeed sensitisation to tropomyosin, preservatives and spices could occur.

Medical treatment of seafarers in the Southern Indian Ocean - interaction between the French Telemedical Maritime Assistance Service (TMAS) and the medical bases of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF).

Background: The waters surrounding the French Southern Lands are a fishing zone, accessible only by sailing for several days in a region where weather conditions are often difficult. The scientific bases of the region have medical staff whose services can be called upon if seafarers require assessment and rapid medical treatment. We conducted an epidemiological study of the maritime teleconsultations carried out by the French Telemedical Maritime Assistance Service (TMAS), where patients navigating in the Southern Indian Ocean zone were advised to disembark on the medical bases in the French Southern Lands, between 2015 and 2020, to receive medical treatment.

PRAME expression in spindle cell melanoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour, and other cutaneous sarcomatoid neoplasms: a comparative analysis.

Diagnosis of spindle cell/sarcomatoid melanoma may be challenging due to frequent loss of expression of melanocytic marker(s) and histomorphologic resemblance to various mesenchymal tumours, particularly malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST). Overexpression of PReferentially expressed Antigen in MElanoma (PRAME) supports a diagnosis of melanoma when evaluating challenging melanocytic tumours. PRAME expression in MPNST and other cutaneous sarcomatoid neoplasms, however, has not been well characterised.
