The daily and seasonal atmospheric concentrations, deposition fluxes and emission sources of a few C3-C9 gaseous alkyl nitrates (ANs) at the Belgian coast (De Haan) on the Southern North Sea were determined. An adapted sampler design for low- and high-volume air-sampling, optimized sample extraction and clean-up, as well as identification and quantification of ANs in air samples by means of gas chromatography mass spectrometry, are reported. The total concentrations of ANs ranged from 0.

Recent progress in time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-S-SIMS) offers perspectives to molecular depth profiling. However, at this moment, the methodology is not yet capable to deal with a range of materials science applications because of the limited depth range, the loss of intensity in the subsurface and the loss of depth resolution at large distances from the original surface.

Given that LiCl induces death in cultured macrophages and that macrophages play an active role in atherosclerotic plaque destabilization, we investigated whether LiCl would induce selective macrophage death to stabilize the structure of the plaque.
Experimental Approach: The effect of LiCl was assessed on macrophages and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in culture, in isolated atherosclerotic carotid arteries from rabbits and after local in vivo treatment via osmotic minipumps to rabbits with collared atherosclerotic carotid arteries.

Since their applicability depends on the relationship between the ion yield and the depth, which is hard to obtain without extensive studies, a combination of a wear test method with S-SIMS surface analysis was performed in the current study. Using this non-sputtering procedure, the relation between the signal intensity and the local concentration remains in principle the same as that at the surface (which is easy to determine).

To prevent the occurrence of unacceptable operating conditions, it is hence necessary to have a reliable analysis method for determining the siloxane content of the sludge. This paper describes and validates such a method, consisting of the extraction of the siloxanes using n-hexane and a subsequent analysis of the extract using GC-FID.

A new ion source design has been developed to improve the extraction and transfer of ions generated in an external laser microprobe source. Calculations predicted trapping of ions initially emitted with angles up to 40 degrees and 60 degrees from the surface and from a distance of 1 mm above the sample, respectively.

A first attempt to measure the molecular compositions of pigments in paintings using static SIMS was made. An investigation of pellets of pure pigments such as auripigment and verdigris allowed the detection of numerous high m/z ions useful for molecular identification. Analysis of pigments in embedded paint fragments, on the other hand, only yielded elemental information because of charge build-up and contamination problems.

Secondary ion yields obtained with these three primary ions have been compared for coatings with different layer thickness, varying from (sub)-monolayer to multilayers, on different substrates (Si, Ag and AgBr cubic microcrystals). For (sub)-monolayers deposited on Ag, Xe(+) and SF(5) (+) primary ions generate similar precursor ion intensities, but with Ga(+) slightly lower precursor ion intensities were obtained.
