Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at allergic breathing problems for people working in jobs like farming, food production, and textiles in Eastern Slovakia from 1990 to 2021.
  • It found that the number of cases, especially occupational asthma (OA), has gone down over the years, particularly in farming jobs.
  • Now, more people are getting these allergic issues from working with metalworking fluids (MWFs) in industrial manufacturing instead of from farming.

Background: Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) is a key feature of asthma, but it may also appear in allergic rhinitis. The type of allergen, as well as regional characteristics, play an important role in the development of BHR. The aim of our study was to analyze allergen sensitization patterns and the factors that affect BHR in allergic rhinitis patients living in temperate continental climate zone.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the occurrence of occupational diseases (ODs) in the automotive industry in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic and to analyze their determinants.

Methods: The aggregated and anonymized data on ODs from the period 2001-2017 were used. A questionnaire survey was conducted in the Czech Republic (response rate 70.

One of the key problems of modern infectious disease medicine is the growing number of drug-resistant and multi-drug-resistant bacterial strains. For this reason, many studies are devoted to the search for highly active antimicrobial substances that could be used in therapy against bacterial infections. As it turns out, snake venoms are a rich source of proteins that exert a strong antibacterial effect, and therefore they have become an interesting research material.

Introduction: Occupational asthma (OA) is the most common occupational lung disease in industrialized countries; however, in Western Europe, a decline in the prevalence of OA and changes in etiological factors has been recorded. Data from Central Europe, where in the past healthcare and economy sectors were different, are rare.

Objective: The aim of this study was to discover the changes related to OA during a four decade long period in the Slovak Republic.

Background: Atopic sensitization belongs to the most common risk factors for bronchial asthma. However, in clinical practice, it is not clear whether sensitization against pollen and perennial allergens is differently associated with the severity of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR).

Aim: To find out whether patients sensitized to perennial allergens differ in severity of bronchial hyperresponsiveness from patients sensitized to pollen allergens.

A major symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome is a secondary Raynaud's phenomenon-vibration white finger (VWF)-which results from a vasospasm of the digital arteries caused by work with vibration devices leading to occupational disease. Pharmacotherapy of VWF is often ineffective or has adverse effects. The aim of this work was to verify the influence of inhalation of partially ionized oxygen (O2•-) on peripheral blood vessels in the hands of patients with VWF.

Background: The proportion of occupational infectious diseases (ID) in the total number of occupational diseases reported in the Slovak Republic (SR) and the Czech Republic (CR) was decreasing from 1973 to 2010. Our study presents a longitudinal analysis of the occurrence of occupational infectious diseases in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic in the period from 1973-2010 with special focus on viral hepatitis.

Methods: The sources of data were national health statistics of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic.

The basic features of bronchial asthma are dyspnea with wheezing and objectively confirmed obstructive respiratory disorder reversible after inhalation of bronchodilators. In stable intermittent bronchial asthma, these features are not present; therefore confirmation of asthma consists of the presence of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR). In the present study, there were 902 bronchoprovocation tests performed for the verification of BHR.

The activity of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), the SOD isoenzyme patterns and the contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), were determined in the livers of male and female rats after subchronic inhalation of mixtures of benzene, cyclohexanone and cyclohexane. Except for decreased GSHPx (with substrate cumene hydroperoxide) and GST activities in female rats, no differences in the activities of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes and TBARS content occurred. Between the activities of GSHPx and GST was observed an indirect relationship.
