Background And Aim: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common lung cancer found in elderly patients. Aging and chronic inflammation are related to its pathogenesis. Functional status, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio describe a chronic inflammation and correlate to the survival of older adults with advanced-stage (IIIB-IV) NSCLC.

Article Synopsis
  • Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a serious condition often seen in chemotherapy patients, with a notable mortality rate of 12.5%, making accurate risk assessment vital for effective treatment.
  • This study, conducted at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital from 2015 to 2019, aimed to compare the effectiveness of two scoring systems—CISNE and MASCC—in predicting complications during hospitalization for FN patients.
  • The results indicated that CISNE score outperformed MASCC in both solid and hematologic cancers, with significant differences in predictive accuracy, particularly highlighting CISNE's superior ability to forecast in-hospital complications.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how adding passion fruit peel pectin and red yeast cell walls to the diet of Nile tilapia affects their growth, immunity, and gut health over an 8-week period.
  • The results showed that the combined supplementation led to significant improvements in growth metrics and immune responses compared to control and individual supplement diets.
  • Analysis also revealed enhanced gut health, with better intestinal morphology and increased diversity of beneficial gut bacteria, suggesting these supplements could be beneficial alternatives in aquaculture practices.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric patients in intensive care with multiple organ failures have a higher mortality risk, making accurate assessment crucial for treatment allocation.
  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the PRISM IV score in predicting mortality within the first 24 and 72 hours of PICU admission at H. Adam Malik General Hospital.
  • Results showed that while certain lab values differed significantly between the 24 and 72-hour assessments, the PRISM IV scores themselves were not reliable predictors of mortality, suggesting that more research is needed to confirm these findings.

The molecular reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing of respiratory tract swabs has become mandatory to confirm the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, RT-PCR tests are expensive, require standardized equipment, and relatively long testing times, and the sample pooling method has been introduced to solve this issue. The aim of this study was to compare the cycle threshold (Ct) values of the individual sample and pooled sample methods to assess how accurate the pooling method was.

Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a global health concern that affects children and leads to delayed growth. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of F100 milk and , a local ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF), on SAM children. An unmasked, non-blinded, two-group, and simple randomized controlled trial was conducted.

Background: There are still many patients newly diagnosed with HIV at an advanced stage in Indonesia. We aimed to identify factors associated with 1-year mortality among cytomegalovirus (CMV)-infected people living with HIV (PLHIV).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study was carried out at a tertiary-care hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia (January 2017 to December 2022).

Aims And Background: In postoperative patients in the intensive care units (ICUs), not only analgesics are needed but also sedation so that the patient can remain calm during treatment, especially patients with mechanical ventilation. By using the measurement parameters of the quantum consciousness index (qCON) and quantum noxious index (qNOX) in measuring the depth of sedation and adequacy of analgesics, the use of subdose ketamine instead of fentanyl and midazolam as sedative, analgesic agents can be performed as a new alternative to nociceptive monitoring methods with more objective results. This study aims to obtain results of comparing qCON and qNOX in postoperative patients by administering subdose ketamine compared with a combination of fentanyl and midazolam in RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan.

Paraneoplastic syndrome is a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms due to neoplasm, attributed to substances produced by tumor cells, or in response to it. Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a well-known paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS), frequently associated with thymic abnormalities, but rarely reported in patients with lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma. This study presents the case of a 52-year-old Indonesian male patient who was diagnosed with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM), a rare B-cell neoplasm, after developing a new onset of MG with myasthenic crisis.

Background: The ideal approach for treating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is still disputed. This study aimed to determine the more cost-effective strategy by comparing early ACL reconstruction (ACLR) surgery to conservative treatment (rehabilitation with optional delayed reconstruction) for ACL injury in a lower/middle-income country (LMIC), Indonesia.

Methods: A decision tree model was constructed for cost-utility analysis of early ACLR versus conservative treatment.

Introduction: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a common procedure for kidney stone removal, involving a small incision in the back and insertion of a nephroscope to extract the stones. Recent advancements include super-mini PCNL, employing smaller instruments for less invasive access to the kidney. However, conventional PCNL often requires tract dilation, which can lead to potential complications.

The Citarum watershed and the Saguling reservoir are vital natural resources in Indonesia, affecting the livelihood of West Java and the DKI Jakarta population. This study aimed to assess the soil erosion in the Upper Citarum watershed and identify its source. The study used the fallout radionuclide technique, geochemical tracers, and an unmixing model to measure soil erosion and the contribution of suspended sediment sources due to erosion.

Objective: This study aims to assess the correlation of ferritin serum level and PELOD-2 score, and determine the effectiveness of ferritin serum level as early indicator of organ dysfunction.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out to pediatric patients with sepsis in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Haji Adam Malik and Universitas Sumatera Utara hospital from June 2021 - January 2022. Complete blood work was done, and ferritin serum level and PELOD-2 score were measured on the first and third day of hospital stay of all the sixty participants aged 1-18 years old with sepsis.

: Indonesia, as a developing country, has limited data on the factors associated with 30-day mortality in COVID-19 patients in Indonesia. As a matter of fact, study analyzing factors associated with 30-day mortality of COVID-19 infection in Indonesia has never been conducted. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by conducting a large-scale analysis of factors associated with 30-day mortality in COVID-19 patients in Indonesia.

Background In COVID-19, the release of pro-inflammatory mediators in the cytokine storm, primarily interleukin-6 (IL-6), has been hypothesized to induce pulmonary intravascular coagulation. However, the relationship between IL-6 and coagulopathy remains unclear in COVID-19 progression. We aimed to investigate the correlation of IL-6 with D-dimer, fibrinogen, prothrombin time (PT), and ferritin.

Mangrove environments have been well recognized as marine litter traps. However, it is unclear whether mangrove sediments sink microplastics more effectively than other marine sediments due to active sedimentation. Furthermore, microplastics archives in mangrove sediments may provide quantitative data on the impact of human activities on environmental pollution throughout history.
