The megophryid genus Oreolalax is comprised of 19 species, most of which are endemic to China. A single species, Oreolalax sterlingae, is the only member of the genus known from Vietnam. During fieldwork on Mount Po Ma Lung in the Hoang Lien Range of northwest Vietnam, we encountered individuals of both Oreolalax sterlingae and another, morphologically divergent species of Oreolalax.

  • E-learning has rapidly transformed higher education globally, with Vietnam's universities focusing on developing e-learning to meet specific local needs.
  • This study uses the demand-driven learning model (DDLM) to examine three main factors influencing e-learning choices: quality content, delivery, and service, revealing that quality content is the most significant factor.
  • The findings suggest that universities in Vietnam should prioritize creating high-quality content and enhancing service delivery to improve e-learning experiences, ultimately guiding policy development in higher education.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated 87 isolates of bacteria related to motile septicemia (MAS) in striped catfish and 25 human bloodstream infection isolates, focusing on species identification and genetic characteristics during MAS outbreaks between 2012-2022 in the Mekong Delta and 2010-2020 for humans.
  • Genomic analysis revealed ST656 and ST251 as the dominant virulent strains in catfish, showing evidence of extensive transmission and significantly higher antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes compared to other strains.
  • The research contributes to understanding the genetic landscape and epidemiology of these bacteria, highlighting their public health impact and the potential for vaccine development through identified conserved proteins.

We describe a new species of the Natricinae genus Rhabdophis Fitzinger, 1843 from the Hoang Lien range, northwest Vietnam. The new species is distinct from all congeneric species on the grounds of morphometric and molecular data. The new species is most similar to Rhabdophis leonardi in terms of morphology but can be distinguished from it based on differences in maxillary tooth count, scalation, and genetic data.

Amolops splendissimus Orlov and Ho, 2007 and A. caelumnoctis Rao and Wilkinson, 2007 were described almost simultaneously from either side of the China-Vietnam border. The two species share a strong morphological resemblance, and their taxonomic distinctiveness has been questioned, yet no one has confirmed the taxonomic relationship and status between the two taxa.

The Hoang Lien Range in northwest Vietnam is known to harbour five species of Leptobrachella, a specious genus of terrestrial frogs. We collected specimens of Leptobrachella from Mount Pu Ta Leng on the second highest peak in the Hoang Lien Range and use morphological and molecular data to show that this population represents a previously undescribed species which we name Leptobrachella graminicola sp. nov.

Article Synopsis
  • Targeted therapy using tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) can improve survival rates for many patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but resistance to these treatments often develops.
  • A study analyzed the genetic and epigenetic changes in 122 Vietnamese NSCLC patients experiencing resistance to TKI therapy, finding that 41.8% had specific resistance mutations, particularly in the EGFR gene.
  • The research highlighted that the level of genome-wide hypomethylation was linked to how long patients responded to TKI, suggesting that liquid biopsies can help understand TKI resistance mechanisms and inform future treatment strategies.

Frogs in the genus Megophrys are an Asian radiation of stream-breeding frogs. The tadpoles of many Megophrys species are undescribed; those that are described are often dubiously allocated to species by association with post metamorphic specimens at collection sites and without supportive molecular data. We provide detailed descriptions of the larvae of five species of Megophrys from the Hoang Lien Range in northwest Vietnam: Megophrys fansipanensis, M.

Megophrys Kuhl and Van Hasselt are an Asian radiation of terrestrial frogs which are usually associated with montane forest (Mahony et al. 2017). The Annam horned frog (Megophrys intermedia) is reported from montane evergreen forest in Vietnam and Lao People's Democratic Republic (Stuart 2005; Hendrix et al.

We describe the tadpole of the Botsford's leaf-litter frog Leptobrachella botsfordi, a species endemic to Mount Fansipan in northwest Vietnam, for the first time. Tadpoles of this species were found in steep, fast-flowing streams at elevations between 2500-2600 m asl. We also report a previously unknown locality for this species on Mount Fansipan, which increases the species' known Extent of Occurrence from 8 km2 to 36 km2.

Article Synopsis
  • Population-specific profiling of cancer gene mutations is essential for better understanding cancer biology and improving diagnostics and treatment tailored to specific groups.
  • The study used ultra-deep massive parallel sequencing of plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) to analyze mutations in 265 Vietnamese patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional tumor tissue analysis.
  • Although cfDNA testing had lower mutation detection rates, it still identified major mutations in key driver genes that were consistent with findings from tissue sample analysis, highlighting its potential for large-scale genetic profiling in populations with limited access to tumor biopsies.

Frogs of the genus include some of the world's smallest amphibians and represent the largest radiation of Asian microhylids, currently encompassing 50 species, distributed across the Oriental biogeographic region. The genus remains one of the taxonomically most challenging groups of Asian frogs and was found to be paraphyletic with respect to large-sized fossorial . In this study we present a time-calibrated phylogeny for frogs in the genus , and discuss taxonomy, historical biogeography, and morphological evolution of these frogs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Comprehensive profiling of mutations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is crucial for guiding targeted therapies and improving patient survival, especially in high-incidence regions like Vietnam.
  • - A study involving 350 Vietnamese NSCLC patients identified that mutations in the EGFR gene (35.4%) and KRAS gene (22.6%) were the most common, with notable differences compared to other ethnic cohorts.
  • - The research found that KRAS mutations were more prevalent in males, while EGFR mutations were more frequent in females, and younger patients (<61 years) showed higher rates of ALK and ROS1 rearrangements.

The identification and quantification of actionable mutations are critical for guiding targeted therapy and monitoring drug response in colorectal cancer. Liquid biopsy (LB) based on plasma cell-free DNA analysis has emerged as a noninvasive approach with many clinical advantages over conventional tissue sampling. Here, we developed a LB protocol using ultra-deep massive parallel sequencing and validated its clinical performance for detection and quantification of actionable mutations in three major driver genes ( and ).
