The valorization of coffee cherry waste through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) was investigated using various organic and inorganic acid catalysts to produce platform chemicals. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of these catalysts for enhancing reaction rates, improving yields, and promoting selectivity. The results showed that sulfuric acid and adipic acid were the most effective, each resulting in a 20% increase in the total yield, demonstrating the potential of organic acids as efficient catalysts in HTC.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer related deaths worldwide and the prevalence in young people especially is increasing annually. In the search for innovative approaches to treat the disease, drug delivery systems (DDS) are promising owing to their unique properties, which allow improved therapeutic results with lower drug concentrations, overcoming drug resistance and at the same time potentially reducing side effects. Silk fibroin is a biopolymer that can be processed to obtain biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticles that can be efficiently loaded by surface adsorption with small-molecule therapeutics and allow their transport and sustained release by modulating their pharmacokinetics.

Colombia is one of the world's leading exporters of coal and coke, with significant reserves of high-quality coal. Most of the coal exported from Colombia is used for power generation, but there is also a class of coal that is suitable for making coke. Coke is a raw material required for making steel, and it is produced by heating coal to high temperatures in the absence of air.

Silk fibroin nanoparticles (SFN) have become a promising tool in drug delivery systems due to their physicochemical characteristics. SFN have shown their outstanding properties as an active vehicle for polyphenols, enhancing their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on macrophages; therefore, it becomes necessary to have an easy, reproducible and scalable production method. In order to improve the production of nanoparticles, we performed direct precipitation of non-dialyzed silk fibroin solutions and evaluated the reproducibility of the method using dynamic light scattering.

Transition metal oxides (TMO) have been successfully used as electrocatalytically active materials for CO reduction in some studies. Because of the lack of understanding of the catalytic behavior of TMOs, electrochemical methods are used to investigate the CO reduction in thin-film nanostructured electrodes. In this context, nanostructured thin films of FeO and MoO in an aprotic medium of acetonitrile have been used to study the CO reduction reaction.

In recent years, silk fibroin nanoparticles (SFNs) have been consolidated as drug delivery systems (DDSs) with multiple applications in personalized medicine. The design of a simple, inexpensive, and scalable preparation method is an objective pursued by many research groups. When the objective is to produce nanoparticles suitable for biomedical uses, their sterility is essential.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and idiopathic inflammatory disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The pharmacological treatments used currently for its treatment lack efficacy, so new therapeutic strategies should be developed. In this context, flavonoids loaded in biopolymeric nanoparticles can be considered as novel promising candidates.

The main objective of the present research is to study the effect of the incorporation of low amounts of silk fibroin nanoparticles (SFNs) and yerba mate nanoparticles (YMNs) on the migration phenomenon into ethanolic food simulants as well as on the disintegrability under composting conditions of mechanically recycled polylactic acid (PLA). Recycled PLA was obtained under simulated recycling conditions by melt processing virgin PLA into films and further subjecting them to an accelerated aging process, which involved photochemical, thermal, and hydrothermal aging steps followed by an intense washing step. SFNs were extracted from cocoons and YMNs from yerba mate waste.

This work aims to provide an effective and novel dual tool for the biodistribution studies of biopolimeric nanoparticles by using modified silk fibroin nanoparticles as a model. This is an indispensable step in the evaluation of the applicability of biopolymeric nanoparticles as drug delivery systems. In this work, we report a new facile method for radiolabeling silk fibroin nanoparticles conjugated to the chelating agent diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid and tagged with fluorescein isothiocyanate.

Spider mites constitute an assemblage of well-known pests in agriculture, but are less known for their ability to spin silk of nanoscale diameters and high Young's moduli. Here, we characterize silk of the gorse spider mite Tetranychus lintearius, which produces copious amounts of silk with nano-dimensions. We determined biophysical characteristics of the silk fibres and manufactured nanoparticles and biofilm derived from native silk.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the most used biobased and biodegradable polymers. Due to their high stability, some of the newest grades of PLA are only degradable under severe industrial conditions. For these grades, mechanical recycling is a viable end-of-life option, with great environmental advantages.

Curcumin, extracted from the rhizome of , has been widely used in medicine for centuries due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-oxidant and anti-microbial effects. However, its bioavailability during treatments is poor because of its low solubility in water, slow dissolution rate and rapid intestinal metabolism. For these reasons, improving the therapeutic efficiency of curcumin using nanocarriers (e.
