Electrophoresis-derived techniques for anti-SSA/Ro60 KDa (anti-SSA) antibodies detection have been progressively replaced by methods using non-native antigens. We aimed to compare the patients' phenotypes and the occurrence of extraglandular manifestations in primary Sjögren's syndrome according to the method used to detect anti-SSA antibodies. Sera from patients with a diagnosis of pSS according to ACR/EULAR 2016 criteria between 2008 and 2017 were tested for anti-SSA antibodies using methods with non-native antigens (magnetic bead multiplex assay; line immunoassays) and one with native antigens (counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE)).

Background: To distinguish large (LFN) and small fiber neuropathies (SFN) in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) requires electroneuromyography (EMG) first, but this is time-consuming and has sometimes a limited accessibility, which can lead to a diagnostic delay. We aimed to identify clinical features that could distinguish SFN from sensitive LFN in SS.

Methods: The study included patients with SS who were monitored in the internal medicine and neurology departments at Angers University Hospital between 2010 and 2016, and who were tested for suspected peripheral neuropathy.

Background: Unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) flow rate is one of the ACR/EULAR 2016 criteria for primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). With a single threshold of ≤ 0.1 mL/min, UWS flow does not take into account the age- and sex-related physiological variations.

The association between elevated plasma vitamin B12 (B12) level and solid cancers has been documented by two national registries. However, their design did not allow for the adjustment for other conditions associated with elevated B12. The objectives of this study were to confirm this association after the adjustment for all causes of elevated B12, and to study the variations according to the increasing B12 level, the type of cancers, and the presence of metastases.

Objectives: Pasteurella bacteraemia is rare, but has been associated with a high mortality rate. The aim of this study was to estimate the impact of comorbidities on patients with Pasteurella bacteraemia.

Methods: All cases of Pasteurella bacteraemia in adults treated in our centre between January 2008 and December 2017 were included retrospectively and compared with cases identified in a systematic review of the literature via MEDLINE covering the years 1951-2017.

Elevated blood lactate after moderate exercise was reported in some of patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). We hypothesised that blood lactate could be also elevated in resting conditions. We aimed investigating the frequency of elevated lactate at rest in ME/CFS patients, and comparing characteristics of ME/CFS patients with and without elevated lactate.

Introduction: Ten to 15% of common variable immunodeficiencies (CVID) develop auto-immune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Treatment is based on immunosuppressants, which produce blocking effects in the CVID. Our objective was to assess their risk-benefit ratio in these immunocompromised patients.

Background: Chronic urticaria is common and is generally idiopathic ("spontaneous"). Links between solid cancer and chronic urticaria have been mentioned in the literature.

Patients And Methods: We report the case of a 63-year-old man presenting with superficial chronic urticaria associated with adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinus.

Introduction: Although the prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer has been improved by extended dissection, the incidence of recurrence still remains high. In esophageal cancer, positron emission tomography (PET) using (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) already demonstrated to be useful for initial staging and monitoring response to therapy. This prospective study compared the ability of FDG-PET and conventional imaging to detect early recurrence of esophageal cancer after initial surgery in asymptomatic patients.

Objectives: Esophageal cancer outcome greatly depends on the pathological stage. Our objectives were to assess prognosis on the basis of the initial fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET scan, focusing on the correlation between overall survival and FDG uptake in the primary, as well as the presence of FDG-positive lymph nodes or distant metastases.

Methods: Fifty-two esophageal cancer patients undergoing FDG-PET as part of initial routine staging procedure before treatment were included.

We reviewed two cases of adenocarcinoma of the gastric tube used for reconstruction after esophagectomy for cancer. The first case gastric cancer was detected during follow-up by endoscopic examination. Total resection of the gastric tube and reconstruction by Roux-en-Y was performed each time.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed data from 1,192 patients who underwent surgery for adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction (AGEJ) between 1985 and 2000, focusing on mortality and morbidity rates associated with the procedure.
  • The findings revealed that 6% of patients died post-operation, with high ASA scores (indicating worse health status) being a key predictor of both mortality and overall complication rates.
  • Other factors influencing complications included age over 60, male gender, and procedure type, highlighting the importance of patient health and demographic characteristics in surgical outcomes for AGEJ.

Since 1993 laparoscopy has become a popular technique of repair of ventral hernias. The authors review the long-term results of a systematic laparoscopic repair of ventral hernias and discuss the current problems compared to open repair. Between 1997 and 2003, 146 patients had a laparoscopic ventral hernia repair using an intraperitoneal Goretex Dualmesh with a 3-5-cm mesh overlap secured with a combination of nonabsorbable sutures and staples.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus (SCCO) is still a pathology of bad prognosis. Specific therapies are now developed against epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, c-kit receptor (CD117), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and p53 protein. This study was aimed at assessing their expression in a large series of SCCO, as well as their potential therapeutic interest in this pathology.

Background: The laparoscopic repair of groin hernias generally involves mesh fixation to avoid displacement and recurrence. Fixation usually uses staples that can lead to nerve injury and chronic postoperative pain. Laparoscopic repairs are associated with a risk of chronic pain of up to 22.

Aim Of The Study: The aim of the study was to assess preoperative radio-chemotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus.

Material And Methods: This study was a retrospective comparison between radio-chemotherapy followed by surgical resection (RCPO) and surgery alone. The RCPO group included patients with tumor located in the middle or lower third of the esophagus, staged T2 or T3 tumors without distant metastases by pretherapeutic assessment.

Cancer of the gastric stump is a classical late complication of gastrectomy for benign lesion. This tumor is defined by various criteria, including a minimal delay of 5 years since the initial gastrectomy and the benignity of the initial lesion. Early diagnosis is difficult since suggestive clinical signs are usually associated with advanced tumors.

Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on chromosome 9 and p16 (MTS1/CDKN2) gene mutations have been reported in various human cancers. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of LOH in 100 oesophageal squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) by typing microsatellite loci and mutations of the p16 gene. The methods used included denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and DNA sequencing of exon 2.

Aim Of The Study: The aim of this retrospective study was to find a link between vascularization failure and fistula in esophageal surgery. The originality of this study was to be based on hyperselective arteriogaphy of the artery vascularizing the gastric plasty, showing all vascular network of the plasty.

Patients And Methods: Hyperselective arteriography was carried out in 14 patients operated for esophagus cancer with a gastric plasty replacement.
