[Functional capacity and cognitive performance of adults from Argentina in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation].

Unlabelled: Introduction: Functional capacity is decreased in people with Cardiovascular Diseases and Chronic Respiratory Diseases. These diseases have also been associated with cognitive dysfunction. The study examines the efficacy of a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program in the recovery of functional capacity and analyzes whether subjects with cardiopulmonary diseases suffer from cognitive dysfunction.

Subtle vaginal evisceration resulting in small bowel evisceration: a case report.

Background: Evisceration of bowel contents through the vagina is a rare event that may be complicated by bowel obstruction.

Objective: We report a case of vaginal evisceration with small bowel obstruction which, in contrast to previous, more dramatic case reports in the literature, is a more subtle and, in fact, characteristic clinical presentation for this unusual occurrence.

Case Report: A 72-year-old woman with a previous history of pelvic surgery presented to the Emergency Department with lower abdominal discomfort and a prolapsing mass from her vagina.

Ultrasonography-guided peripheral intravenous catheter survival in ED patients with difficult access.

Objectives: We determined the survival and complications of ultrasonography-guided peripheral intravenous (IV) catheters in emergency department (ED) patients with difficult peripheral access.

Methods: This was a prospective, observational study conducted in an academic hospital from April to July of 2007. We included consecutive adult ED patients with difficult access who had ultrasonography-guided peripheral IVs placed.

Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm presenting as painless testicular ecchymosis: the scrotal sign of Bryant revisited.

The diagnosis of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is often missed as a result of an atypical presentation, resulting in increased mortality. Here we present an unusual case of painless scrotal ecchymosis as a presentation of ruptured AAA. We review the origin of the scrotal sign of Bryant and emphasize the importance of this uncommon finding as a diagnostic aid in atypical cases of ruptured AAA.

The painful eye.

Emergency physicians are required to diagnose and treat patients who have a painful eye on a regular basis. This article focuses on ophthalmologic emergencies that range in presentation from mild to severe symptomatology and include vision and eye-threatening ailments. The etiology, pathophysiology, physical examination, and treatment of the following conditions are discussed: acute angle closure glaucoma, scleritis, anterior uveitis, optic neuritis, keratitis, and corneal abrasion.

Reactive oxygen species are downstream mediators of p53-dependent apoptosis.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated as potential modulators of apoptosis. Conversely, experiments under hypoxic conditions have suggested that apoptosis could occur in the absence of ROS. We sought to determine whether a central modulator of apoptosis, p53, regulates the levels of intracellular ROS and whether a rise in ROS levels is required for the induction of p53-dependent apoptosis.

Physician's attitudes toward the ill aged and nursing homes.

A survey of physicians in private practice (exclusive of pediatricians) was conducted in a medium sized suburban city in the New York metropolitan area, to determine whether physicians' attitudes toward the ill aged and nursing homes were predictors of the quality of medical care available to area nursing home patients. Questionnaires were circulated to 302 practitioners. Of the 28 percent who responded, 32 percent were psychiatrists, 15 percent primary care physicians and 8 percent orthopedists.

Assessment of ambulatory care: application of the tracer methodology.

Utilizing a tracer method in the assessment of care was investigated in a large pediatric clinic. A set of tracers were selected and agreement was obtained concerning the relevance of care criteria by at least 80 per cent of the facility physicians. One tracer, iron-deficiency anemia, was studied using two nonphysician abstractors to review a sample of 100 patient records with hemoglobins of 11.
