malaria parasites invade and multiply inside red blood cells (RBCs), the most iron-rich compartment in humans. Like all cells, requires nutritional iron to support essential metabolic pathways, but the critical mechanisms of iron acquisition and trafficking during RBC infection have remained obscure. Parasites internalize and liberate massive amounts of heme during large-scale digestion of RBC hemoglobin within an acidic food vacuole (FV) but lack a heme oxygenase to release porphyrin-bound iron.

Management guidelines for bleeding gastroesophageal varices are well established in the literature. Ectopic varices that occur outside of this typical location are an uncommon complication of portal hypertension.

Pulmonary complications of COVID-19 are well established in the literature. However, the virus causes numerous extrapulmonary manifestations, notably acute aortic occlusion (AAO).

We sought to establish whether midnasal vault narrowing is a component of well-defined syndromes of nasal narrowing, such as bilateral choanal atresia and pyriform aperture stenosis, and to characterize the nasal anatomy of patients with syndromic craniosynostosis.
Materials And Methods: A convenience sample of patients with pyriform aperture stenosis, bilateral choanal atresia, and Apert and Crouzon syndromes with maxillofacial CT scans was identified.
Background: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the most common cause of cancer death in women. This report presents outcomes from a multidisciplinary breast clinic established in 1989 with the specific aim of providing a rapid, integrated assessment service for patients with breast disease.
Methods: A prospective data collection and analysis using a Microsoft Access (Microsoft Corp.
Background: The laparoscopic approach must be shown to be cost-effective as well as safe and technically effective before being widely adopted. A review of 54 consecutive patients who underwent open and laparoscopic colposuspension is presented and a cost-analysis is performed comparing the two approaches.
Methods: This study was a retrospective controlled review of patient records and accounts of in-hospital costs incurred at a private hospital.
