Previous human organotypic retinal culture (HORC) models have utilized detached retinas; however, without the structural support conferred by retinal pigment epithelium-choroid (RPE-choroid) and sclera, the integrity of the fragile retina can easily be compromised. The aim of this study was to develop a novel HORC model that contains the retina, RPE-choroid and sclera to maintain retinal integrity when culturing retinal explants. Diabetic retinopathy (DR), the most common ocular complication associated with diabetes, is a chronic vascular and inflammatory disease that leads to vision loss. The inflammasome pathway, a key part of the innate immune system, is required to activate chronic inflammation in DR. Differences in the dietary intake of cobalt were assessed for vegans, lacto-ovo-vegetarian and non-vegetarian Australians using food intake logs, and daily or average trend recall over three months. A significant decrease in cobalt intake was observed for the lacto-ovo-vegetarian population compared with the intake in vegans and omnivores. There is no RDI for cobalt, however, the cobalt intake of Australians was similar to that reported in other countries.

The cobalt content of Australian foods is unknown, and as this content is, at least in part, related to the respective concentrations in the Australian soil, data collected previously in other countries may not reflect the levels in Australian produce. To compare reported food cobalt levels to that found in Australian foods, one hundred and fifty different food and beverage items from each of the major food groups were selected for analysis, based on annual sales figures in Australia. Type III secretion systems identified in bacterial pathogens of animals and plants transpose effectors and toxins directly into the cytosol of host cells or into the extracellular milieu. Proteins of the type III secretion apparatus are conserved among diverse and distantly related bacteria. Many type III apparatus proteins have homologues in the flagellar export apparatus, supporting the notion that type III secretion systems evolved from the flagellar export apparatus.

Aldose reductase (AR), best known as the first enzyme in the polyol pathway of sugar metabolism, has been implicated in a wide variety of physiological functions and in the etiology of diabetic complications. We have determined the structures and chromosomal locations of the mouse AR gene (Aldor1) and of two genes highly homologous to Aldor1: the fibroblast growth factor regulated protein gene (Fgfrp) and the androgen regulated vas deferens protein gene (Avdp). The number of introns and their locations in the mouse Aldor1 gene are identical to those of rat and human AR genes and also to those of Fgfrp and Avdp.

In some patients, lack of bone at a desired fixture site has resulted, by necessity, in the placement of endosseous implants in less than favorable locations. The principles of guided bone regeneration can be used to restore lost alveolar bone and permit the placement of implants at more ideal locations, or to provide a more favorable ridge form to support a removable prosthesis. The advantages of a two-stage technique involving bone grafting followed by a healing period prior to implant placement are discussed.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is being performed all over the world, with major success in the management of ischemic heart disease and angina pectoris. Complications of bypass grafting include partial or total graft reocclusion, and less common entities such as aneurysm or pseudoaneurysm formation. Noninvasive imaging procedures exist which can help include or exclude the presence of these unusual types of complications when mass-like abnormalities are seen on a chest X-ray following coronary artery bypass grafting.

A physical map of Campylobacter upsaliensis ATCC 43954 was constructed from DNA fragments generated by SalI (5' G/TCGAC), NarI (5' GG/CGCC) and BssHII (5' G/CGCGC) restriction digests separated using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Cricopharyngeal myotomy and diverticulectomy have become the standard therapy for the vast majority of patients with pharyngoesophageal diverticula.
