Importance: The number of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) seeking treatment in non-IDD-specific health care settings is growing. Little is known about how adults with IDD use health care services in specialty settings, including occupational therapy services.
Objective: To describe adults with IDD in hospitals and identify differences in utilization patterns compared with patients without IDD.
African American (AA) adults are disproportionally affected by type 2 diabetes and are diagnosed at an earlier age, but are less adherent to diabetes medications compared with the general population. This qualitative study sought to describe the experiences of taking diabetes medications among midlife AA men and women with type 2 diabetes and to identify factors that influence these experiences. Fifteen AAs completed semistructured interviews.

Invasive monitoring with subdural electrodes is an effective technique for localizing epileptogenic foci. Previous studies reported varying complication rates, and these may deter more widespread adoption.

It is important to quantify satisfaction with care because it involves the patient in the care experience and decreases the potential gap between expected and actual care delivered.
Methods: We tested a preliminary 23-item instrument to measure patient satisfaction with general anesthesia care.

Background: Few safe and effective dietary supplements are available to promote weight loss. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of glucomannan, a water-soluble fiber supplement, for achieving weight loss in overweight and moderately obese individuals consuming self-selected diets.
Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to take 1.
Introduction: Patient satisfaction with any health care experience is the result of a complex set of interactions between the patient and the health system in which care is received. Measuring patient satisfaction allows quantification of the congruence between the expectations of care and the care that is received. It is important to quantify satisfaction with care because it involves the patient in the care experience and decreases the potential gap between expected and actual care delivered over time.

Specifically, what is the best mix of equipment to purchase and install on clinical units based on staff preferences and budget constraints? The authors discuss their evaluation of stationary personal computers, workshops on wheels, and handheld tablets related to timeliness of data entry and their use of focus groups to ascertain the pros/cons of data-entry devices and staff preferences. An assessment of the implications for costs related to the timeliness of data entry is also presented.

However, the safety and feasibility of the oropharyngeal route for the administration of colostrum have not been determined.
Purpose: To determine the safety of oropharyngeal administration of own mother's colostrum to ELBW infants in first days of life.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was a psychometric evaluation of the PAINAD to assess pain in hospitalized cognitively impaired and intact older adults admitted for surgical repair of a hip fracture.
Method: A descriptive correlational design was used. A convenience sample of older patients hospitalized for surgical repair of a hip fracture was used.
Purpose: To describe (a) the extent of inter- and intrainstitutional variation in labor, capital, and process-of-care variables related to nursing service on U.S. adult acute and intensive care units; (b) the extent to which resource clustering exists; and (c) an analysis of resource cluster role that explains variation in physical restraint rates.

The PLUS Nursing Intervention, which is aimed at caregivers of elderly persons with depression and designed to increase caregiver personal resources, respond to caregiver learning/skill development needs, address caregiver unanticipated needs, and assist with caregiver stress/illness management, was pilot tested for efficacy. Thirteen families were assigned to the PLUS group and 12 families to the standard home care control group. There were no significant outcome differences between the two groups.
