Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is evidence for impaired blood-brain barrier (BBB) in both diseases, but its role in the interplay between them is not clear. Here, we investigated the effects of high-fat diet (HFD), a model for T2D, on the Tg2576 mouse model of AD, in regard to BBB function.

Sodium butyrate is an established differentiation-inducing agent and has been shown to increase galectin-1 expression in colon carcinoma cells. We studied the roles of butyrate and galectin-1 in the induction of differentiation and apoptosis in the prostate cancer cell line LNCaP.

Northern analysis and immunoblotting experiments showed that three cell lines express both galectins. However, only galectin-1 was detected on the surface of these cells.
