Introduction: The present study aimed at evaluating the systemic profile and network connectivity of immune mediators during acute chikungunya fever (CHIKF) according to days of symptoms onset and ageing.

Methods: A total of 161 volunteers (76 CHIKF patients and 85 non-infected healthy controls) were enrolled.

Results And Discussion: Data demonstrated that a massive and polyfunctional storm of serum immune mediators was observed in CHIKF.

The present study aimed at investigating whether the hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment would impact the neutralizing antibody production, viremia levels and the kinetics of serum soluble mediators upon planned 17DD-Yellow Fever (YF) primovaccination (Bio-Manguinhos-FIOCRUZ) of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). A total of 34 pSS patients and 23 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. The pSS group was further categorized according to the use of HCQ (HCQ and Non-HCQ).

The present study aimed at evaluating the YF-specific neutralizing antibody profile besides a multiparametric analysis of phenotypic/functional features of cell-mediated response elicited by the 1/5 fractional dose of 17DD-YF vaccine, administered as a single subcutaneous injection. The immunological parameters of each volunteer was monitored at two time points, referred as: before (Day 0) [Non-Vaccinated, NV] and after vaccination (Day 30-45) [Primary Vaccinees, PV]. Data demonstrated high levels of neutralizing antibodies for PV leading to a seropositivity rate of 93%.

Studies on yellow fever vaccine (YF) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are scarce. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate YF neutralizing antibody seroprevalence and titers in previously vaccinated adults with CKD, on dialysis (D-CKD) or not (ND-CKD), compared to healthy persons. The micro Plaque Reduction Neutralization-Horseradish Peroxidase (μPRN-HP) test was used.

The re-emergence of yellow fever (YF) urged new mass vaccination campaigns and, in 2017, the World Health Organization approved the use of the fractional dose (FD) of the YF vaccine due to stock shortage. In an observational cross-sectional investigation, we have assessed viremia, antibodies, soluble mediators and effector and memory T and B-cells induced by primary vaccination of volunteers with FD and standard dose (SD). Similar viremia and levels of antibodies and soluble markers were induced early after immunization.

In this study, we optimized and validated a PRNT assay to assess 50% virus neutralization and evaluated its accuracy to measure NAbs to the original strain or variant of SARS-CoV-2.

Interest in Antarctic fungi has grown due to their resilience in harsh environments, suggesting the presence of valuable compounds from its organisms, such as those presenting photoprotective potential, since this environment suffers the most dangerous UV exposure in the world. Therefore, this research aimed to assess the photoprotective potential of compounds from sustainable marine sources, specifically seaweed-derived fungi from Antarctic continent. These studies led to discovery of photoprotective and antioxidant properties of metabolites from Arthrinium sp.

Timeline kinetics of protective immunity to SARS-CoV-2 upon primary vaccination and humoral response to variants after booster dose.

New variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have emerged, imposing the need for periodic booster doses. However, whether booster doses should be applied to the entire population or groups, and the booster doses interval, remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated humoral reactivity kinetics from before the first dose to 180 days after the third booster dose in different schedules in a well-controlled health worker cohort.

Yellow fever vaccination in Brazil: Short-term safety and immunogenicity in juvenile autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

Yellow fever vaccine (YFV) is a live attenuated vaccine usually contraindicated for juvenile autoimmune rheumatic disease (JARD) patients. During the recent epidemic in Sao Paulo-Brazil, YFV was indicated for patients under low immunosuppression. Thirty JARD patients with inactive diseases undergoing low immunosuppression and 30 healthy controls (HC) were vaccinated with a fractional dose 17DD YFV (∼5495 IU) and evaluated 30 days later.

Peripheral giant cell granuloma associated with a dental implant.

Background: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is an uncommon pathology that affects gingival or alveolar mucosa. Although PGCG can be associated with dental implants, little is known about this lesion and implant osseointegration as well as its etiopathogenesis and the treatments available. This study sought to report a rare case of PGCG associated with dental implant, emphasizing its clinical and histopathological aspects.

The role of RANKL/RANK/OPG system on bone remodeling is well known, and there is evidence that it is also important to cardiovascular and kidney pathology, although the underlying mechanisms are not elucidated so far. Thus, we investigated in a mice model of diet-induced obesity and diabetes if renal histopathological changes are associated with the expression of RANKL/RANK/OPG system and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Three months old C57BL/6 mice were fed with control (C) AIN93 M diet or high-fat high sucrose (HFHS) diets for 21 weeks (CEUA/UFF #647/15).

Organotropism of total mercury (THg) in Cichla pinima, ecological aspects and human consumption in fish from Amazon region, Brazil.

Specimens of the Cichla pinima are of ecological and economic importance in the Amazon region and are a good bioindicator species of Hg bioaccumulation. Adult specimens of Cichla pinima were obtained by fisheries in the Tapajós river region's impacted gold mining area. Tissues such as muscle, liver, skin, and gill were submitted for total mercury (THg) analysis.

Orbital aperture morphometry in Brazilian population by postero-anterior Caldwell radiographs.

Morphological variations of the orbital aperture measurements act as parameter for sexual and ethnic determination. The aim of this study evaluated the dimensions of the orbital aperture in Brazilian subjects to verify its relationship to gender. The orbital apertures of 97 individuals were examined through Caldwell radiographic technique.

Synchronous orofacial granulomatosis and mucoepidermoid carcinoma: paraneoplastic syndrome or coincidence?

Some malignant neoplasias induce the appearance of local or systemic manifestations at distant sites, which can act as indicators of their presence in a process named paraneoplastic syndrome. Granulomatous reactions have already been described related to malignancies. This report describes a case of synchronous orofacial granulomatosis and mucoepidermoid carcinoma and discusses the significance of this association.

Rhinoliths causing palatal perforation: case report and literature review.

Rhinoliths are calcified masses formed within the nasal cavity because of the solidification of mucus, debris, or foreign objects by gradual accretion of mineral salts. They are mostly asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed, although some patients may complain of nasal discharge and obstruction. Ulceration of the nasal mucosa, facial swelling, and bone destruction are less frequently observed but bring about difficulties for differential diagnoses with several pathologic entities.
