Objective: This study investigates the proteomic profiles of oral epithelial dysplasia with lichenoid features (OEDwithLF) and evaluates its relevance as a histopathological feature for lichenoid mucositis (LM) through differential proteomic characterization.

Study Design: SWATH-MS proteomic profiling was conducted on FFPE samples from 6 OEDwithLF, 5 OED cases without associated lymphocytic infiltration, and 5 LM cases. Protein expression levels were quantified and compared.

Objective: Given the absence of a standardized action protocol for treating patients with dental implants (DIs) who are subjected to radiotherapy (RT), we have conducted an extensive review and analysis of published literature on this subject. Our objective is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of RT on the bone surrounding osseointegrated implants during and after treatment.

Study Design: We conducted a literature review using PubMed (MEDLINE) to identify studies describing the effects of RT on preexisting osseointegrated and/or loaded DIs.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common oral malignancy, often preceded by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Currently, no clinical biomarker exists to predict malignancy, necessitating OPMD follow-up. Habits and environmental factors, such as smoking, and alcohol consumption, influence OSCC onset.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral mucositis (OM) is a common side effect of cancer treatment, affecting patient quality of life and treatment effectiveness, making its prevention crucial.
  • A systematic review analyzed data from various databases, focusing on whether specific topical treatments reduce the onset and severity of OM in cancer patients compared to standard treatments or placebo, leading to a network meta-analysis of 30 clinical trials with over 2500 patients.
  • Results indicated that topical sucralfate was the most effective intervention for preventing OM, due to its cytoprotective properties, affordability, ease of use, and safety.

Purpose: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection responsible for many anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. Dental care providers have the potential to influence vaccine uptake, yet little is known about how patients perceive their role in HPV education and prevention.

Methods: Parents of adolescents aged 9 to 17 years (n = 375) were recruited from Valdeorras District Hospital (Galicia, Spain) to investigate parents' attitudes concerning the involvement of dental care providers in discussions related to HPV.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is characterized by an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Their plasma-derived exosomes deliver immunomodulatory molecules and cargo that correlate significantly with clinical parameters. This study aims to assess the exosomal profile as a potential tool for early detection of relapse and long-term outcomes in OSCC patients undergoing conventional therapy.

Background: Mortality is linked to tumor budding (TB) in certain neoplasms. TB as a relevant histopathological feature is conditioned by tumor site, a specific study on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is needed.

Methods: A comprehensive meta-analysis was undertaken to investigate the relationship between TB and HNSCC-related outcomes.

Background: Management of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) is still challenging. Despite the diagnostic ascertainment by bioptic examination, this method is poorly informative of the prognosis and subsequent malignant transformation. Prognosis is based on histological findings by grading of dysplasia.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a growing disease, affecting more than 700.000 cases per year and ranking as the sixth most prevalent type of cancer worldwide. The impossibility of properly entering into apoptosis directly influences uncontrolled growth and consequently tumor development and progression.

Objective: Growing evidence is highlighting the inefficacy of clindamycin as an effective substitute to amoxicillin in patients self-reporting a penicillin allergy. The hypothesis is that implant failure is higher in these patients, when compared to patients receiving penicillin. To test this hypothesis, a systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken and a protocol for delabeling penicillin allergic patients was presented.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is characterized by poor survival, mostly due to local invasion, loco-regional recurrence, and metastasis. Given that the weakening of cell-to-cell adhesion is a feature associated with the migration and invasion of cancer cells, different studies have explored the prognostic utility of cell adhesion molecules such as E-cadherin (E-cad). This study aims to summarize current evidence in a meta-analysis, focusing on the prognostic role of E-cad in OSCC.

Background: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has a frequent adverse effect after the administration of nitrogenous bisphosphonates, as non-nitrogenous bisphosphonates are metabolized more rapidly and would produce this effect to a lesser extent. The objective of this study is to analyze the results obtained in the literature with the use of L-PRF in the treatment of ONJ through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Material And Methods: Medline (via PubMed), Cochrane, Web of Science and Grey Literature Database was screened from which 10 were selected.

Chronic hyperplastic candidiasis (CHC) is a prototypical oral lesion caused by chronic infection. A major controversy surrounding CHC is whether this oral lesion owns malignant transformation (MT) potential. The aim of the present study was to evaluate current evidence on the MT of CHC and to determine the variables which have the greatest influence on cancer development.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is an ascending and agressive disease. The search for new molecular markers is emerging to solve difficulties in diagnosis, risk management, prognosis and effectiveness of treatments. Proteins related to apoptotic machinery have been identified as potential biomarkers.

: MGMT methylation is a well-described biomarker in several solid tumors and MLH1 seems to occur in the initial stages of oral carcinogenesis. The aims of this study were to evaluate MHL1 and MGMT methylation levels in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), and to integrate this information with The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. : To determine the percentage of gene methylation in MLH1 and MGMT, pyrosequencing analysis was conducted.

Background: Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia is considered an uncommon oral potentially malignant disorder with a high malignant transformation rate. The objective of this paper was to define its cancer incidence and related risk factors.

Methods: A retrospective audit of 34 patients diagnosed with proliferative verrucous leukoplakia from a university-based unit, during the period from 1995 to 2019 was performed.

Background: Oral erythroplakia has been classically considered as the potentially malignant disorder with the highest rate of malignant development into squamous cell carcinoma. This critical systematic review and meta-analysis aim to estimate the malignant development rate of oral erythroplakia and identify the associated risk factors.

Methods: We performed a bibliographic search in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and LILACS, with keywords "erythroplakia," "erythroplasia," "malignant transformation," "malignant development," "malignization," "carcinogenesis," "oral cancer," "oral squamous cell carcinoma," "mouth neoplasm," and "prognosis.

The aim of this study was to present a new technique for plastic carrier removal in retreatment situations. The gutta-percha technique that uses plastic carrier obturators is one of the most commonly used; however, removing this core is tedious and time-consuming. Two clinical cases were performed by an expert in the field of endodontics, to expose this technique, in which a conical ultrasonic tip with an active point and a Hëdstrom hand file allowed the removal of the plastic carrier quickly and effectively.
