Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with no precise method for early detection. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) expressing the dynamic polarity of the cytoskeletal membrane protein, ezrin, have been proposed to play a crucial role in tumor progression and metastasis. This study investigated the diagnostic and prognostic potential of polarized circulating tumor cells (p-CTCs) in HCC patients.

In the quality control of synthetic peptides, mass spectroscopy (MS) serves as an optimal method for evaluating authenticity and integrity. Typically, the sequence of a synthetic peptide is already established, thereby directing the focus of analysis towards validating its identity and purity. This chapter outlines straightforward methodologies for conducting MS analyses specifically tailored for synthetic peptides.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is usually diagnosed based on the presence of TBE virus (TBEV)-specific IgM and IgG antibodies in serum. However, antibodies induced by vaccination or cross-reactivity to previous flavivirus infections may result in false positive TBEV serology. Detection of TBEV RNA may be an alternative diagnostic approach to detect viral presence and circumvent the diagnostic difficulties present when using serology.

Objectives: Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL), an indicator of neuronal damage, is increasingly recognized as a potential biomarker for disease activity in neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, we wanted to investigate sNfL as a prognostic marker in a large, well-defined population of 90 patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). In addition, we sought to explore associations between symptoms and sNfL levels during the acute phase of LNB.

Two patients, recently treated with the B-cell-depleting monoclonal antibody, rituximab, had 2-3 months of progressive systemic symptoms; comprehensive investigations did not clarify the diagnosis. Transient radicular pain at disease onset had suggested neuroborreliosis, but seronegativity and an atypical clinical course made this unlikely. However, PCR identified DNA in cerebrospinal fluid, establishing the diagnosis of neuroborreliosis.

It has recently been demonstrated how the nitrogen dopant concentration in graphene can be controlled spatially on the nano-meter scale using a molecular mask. This technique may be used to create ballistic electron optics-like structures of high/low doping regions; for example, to focus electron beams, harnessing the quantum wave nature of the electronic propagation. Here, we employ large-scale Greens function transport calculations based on a tight-binding approach.

Metastasis is the main cause of cancer-related death and therapies specifically targeting metastasis are highly needed. Cortical cell polarity (CCP) is a prometastatic property of circulating tumor cells affecting their ability to exit blood vessels and form new metastases that constitute a promising point of attack to prevent metastasis. However, conventional fluorescence microscopy on single cells and manual quantification of CCP are time-consuming and unsuitable for screening regulators.

Background: Complete recovery after adequately treated neuroborreliosis is common, but studies report that some patients experience persistent symptoms like self-reported cognitive problems and fatigue. Persisting symptoms are often termed post-Lyme disease syndrome, of which etiology is not clearly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate cognitive function, possible structural changes in brain regions and level of fatigue.

Hypoxia affects tumor aggressiveness and activates pathways associated with epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) which are crucial for tumor progress. In this study, the correlation of hypoxia and EMT with sentinel lymph node status and tumor-specific survival was investigated in primary melanomas. CD34 for capillary count and Hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) as hypoxia indicators as well as Ezrin and L1-Cell Adhesion Molecule (L1CAM), both critical proteins contributing to EMT, were analyzed using immunohistochemistry in 49 melanoma patients with long follow-up (F/U, mean 110 months; range 12−263 months).

Purpose: Symptoms of cranial neuritis are a common presentation of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). Imaging studies are scarce and report contradictory low prevalence of enhancement compared to clinical studies of cranial neuropathy. We hypothesized that MRI enhancement of cranial nerves in LNB is underreported, and aimed to assess the prevalence and clinical impact of cranial nerve enhancement in early LNB.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, and early stages are treated with lumpectomy and irradiation. Irradiation, however, leads to reduced vascularization and fibrosis, which may influence the cosmetic outcome unfavourably and increase complications after subsequent surgery on irradiated breasts. Patients with significant asymmetry after treatment may desire corrective reduction mammoplasty or mastopexy, but this may be associated with increased complication rates.

Long-term cognitive problems and fatigue after adequately treated neuroborreliosis has caused uncertainty and debate among patients and health care workers for years. Despite several studies, the prevalence, cause and severity of such complaints are still not clarified. More knowledge about cognitive function, fatigue and MRI findings in the acute phase of neuroborreliosis could possibly contribute to clarification.
