Herein hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (hPEI) cryogels are reported for the selective and reversible adsorption of elemental chlorine. The cryogels are prepared in an aqueous solution by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde at subzero temperatures. The final macroporous composites bearing ammonium chloride groups are obtained after freeze-drying.

Article Synopsis
  • The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept links early adverse conditions, like maternal protein restriction, to chronic diseases, specifically prostate cancer (PCa).
  • The study investigated the expression of piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) in the ventral prostate of rat offspring affected by maternal malnutrition, revealing developmental delays and altered tissue structures.
  • Findings suggest that maternal malnutrition influences piRNA expression, which may have long-term effects on prostate health and increase the risk of disorders as the offspring age.

This work outlines the first microwave (MW)-assisted protocol for the production of biofuel precursor furfural (FF) from the raw agricultural waste almond hull (AH), olive stone (OS), and the winemaking-derived grape stalk (GS), grape marc (GM) and exhausted grape marc (EGM) through a one-pot synthesis process. To enhance the overall yield, a catalytic process was firstly developed from xylose, major constituent of hemicellulose present in lignocellulosic biomass. This method afforded FF with 100 % selectivity, yielding over 85 % in isolated product when using HSO, as opposed to a 37 % yield with AlCl·6HO, at 150 °C in only 10 min.

Designing materials capable of disinfecting water without releasing harmful by-products is an ongoing challenge. Here, we report a novel polycationic sponge material synthesized from chitosan derivatives and cellulose fibers, exhibiting antibacterial properties. The design of such material is based on three key principles.

(1) The objective of this study was to quantify the exact clinical-radiological efficacy and safety of the extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) technique in spinal surgery; (2) A meta-analysis was performed using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Collaboration Library. Studies focusing on patients surgically treated with XLIF were included. The outcomes were as follows: visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI), radiological outcomes, and adverse events.

FANT (Fuente Ampliada de Neutrones Térmicos; in Spanish) is a thermal neutron irradiation facility with an extended and very uniform irradiation area, which has been developed by the Neutron Measurement Laboratory of the Energy Engineering Department at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (LMN-UPM). In FANT, an isotopic neutron source (Am/Be) produces the primary neutrons. The design and facility optimization were carried out by extensive Monte Carlo calculations.

Head trauma is frequently related to the misuse of drinking vessels as weapons. Forensic reports usually evaluate these blunt injuries as having occurred in scenarios where the alcohol intake is high. Fatal consequences are seen in blows with glass bottles aiming at the head.

Methane emissions from oil and gas production provide an important contribution to global warming. We investigate 2020 emissions from the largest gas field in Algeria, Hassi R'Mel, and the oil-production-dominated area Hassi Messaoud. We use methane data from the high-resolution (20 m) Sentinel-2 instruments to identify and estimate emission time series for 11 superemitters (including 10 unlit flares).

Reducing methane emissions from fossil fuel exploitation (oil, gas, coal) is an important target for climate policy, but current national emission inventories submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are highly uncertain. Here we use 22 months (May 2018-Feb 2020) of satellite observations from the TROPOMI instrument to better quantify national emissions worldwide by inverse analysis at up to 50 km resolution. We find global emissions of 62.

Purpose: The main objective of this study was to assess the overall incidence of genitourinary anomalies in patients with congenital scoliosis by providing the highest level of evidence. The secondary objective was to look for associations and trends influencing the incidence.

Methods: A meta-analysis using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Collaboration Library database was carried out.

Glenohumeral dislocation is a common shoulder injury that can result in nerve injury. However, the full impact of these injuries on patient function and recovery remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to determine (1) the incidence, (2) risk factors, and (3) functional outcomes following nerve injuries after glenohumeral dislocation.

Although open surgery is the conventional option for ankle arthritis, there are some reports in the literature regarding the use of the arthroscopy procedure with outstanding results. The primary purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the effect of the surgery technique (open-ankle arthrodesis vs. arthroscopy) in patients with ankle osteoarthritis.

Purpose: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) in radius fractures.

Methods: The meta-analysis was performed using the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Collaboration Library databases. Studies focusing on patients with conservative or surgically treated radius fractures leading to CRPS were included.

The circular economy considers waste to be a new raw material for the development of value-added products. In this context, agroindustrial lignocellulosic waste represents an outstanding source of new materials and platform chemicals, such as levulinic acid (LA). Herein we study the microwave (MW)-assisted acidic conversion of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) into LA.

The purpose of this study is to compare axial rotation range of motion for the upper cervical spine during three movements: axial rotation, rotation + flexion + ipsilateral lateral bending and rotation + extension + contralateral lateral bending before and after occiput-atlas (C0-C1) stabilization. Ten cryopreserved C0-C2 specimens (mean age 74 years, range 63-85 years) were manually mobilized in 1. axial rotation, 2.

A new selective fluorogenic chemosensor for Hg, which combines a calixarene derivative with a BODIPY core as a fluorescent reporter, is described. The remarkable change in its fluorogenic properties in DMSO and CHCl has been analyzed. A study of its spectral properties on dilution, along with molecular modeling studies, allowed us to explain that this behavior involves the formation of a J-dimer, as well as how the sensing mechanism of Hg proceeds.

The objective of this study is to analyze the 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) motion of the spine using the finite helical axis (FHA) in three postmortem human surrogates (PMHS) sled tests. The sled test configurations corresponded to a 30° nearside oblique impact at 35 km/h. Two different restraint system versions (RSv) were used.

As atmospheric methane concentrations increase at record pace, it is critical to identify individual emission sources with high potential for mitigation. Here, we leverage the synergy between satellite instruments with different spatiotemporal coverage and resolution to detect and quantify emissions from individual landfills. We use the global surveying Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) to identify large emission hot spots and then zoom in with high-resolution target-mode observations from the GHGSat instrument suite to identify the responsible facilities and characterize their emissions.

Major Depressive Disorder is a chronic, recurring, and potentially fatal disease, affecting up to 20% of the global population. Since the monoamine hypothesis was proposed more than 60 years ago, only a few relevant advances have been made, with very little disease course changing from a pharmacological perspective. Moreover, since the negative efficacy of novel molecules is frequently reported in studies, many pharmaceutical companies have put new studies on hold.

The persistent sciatic artery is an uncommon disease, considered an axial congenital vascular malformation due to the lack of involution of the sciatic artery during embryonic development. It may be associated with abnormalities in the development of the iliac, common femoral and superficial femoral arteries. Patients may be asymptomatic, or they could present chronic pain, such as sciatic neuralgia, caused by nerve damage, since it is close to the abnormal persistent vessel, or due to ischemic pain, as a result of a thrombosis or embolism of an aneurysm, which could compromise the viability of the limb.
