Despite the worldwide growth of class II and III obesity, the factors associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in these obese individuals are not widely understood. Moreover, no study has investigated these associations in South America. Our study aimed to investigate the prevalence of T2DM and its associated factors, with an emphasis on biochemical parameters and eating habits, in class II and III obese individuals.

Severe obesity and diabetes lead to a significant decrease in quality of life. Although controversial, population-wide studies have implicated obesity in the development of tuberculosis (TB). Non-classical monocytes have been described in obesity and TB, whereas in diabetes they have been associated with poorer clinical outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The Pro12Ala (rs1801282) and -174G >C (rs1800795) genetic variations are linked to body weight regulation and obesity risk, and this study aimed to explore their effects on severely obese individuals in Brazil.
  • In a study of 150 severely obese patients, those with the Ala allele of the Pro12Ala variant showed higher levels of body fat and blood pressure compared to other genetic variants, while the -174G >C variant did not have significant associations with obesity traits.
  • The findings suggest that carrying the Ala allele is associated with greater obesity-related measures, emphasizing the role of genetic factors in body composition and metabolic health in severely obese patients.

Background: Previous intervention studies have reported the association of the Pro12Ala (rs1801282) and -174G > C (rs1800795) polymorphisms with weight loss; however, their results are inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the effect of the Pro12Ala and -174G > C polymorphisms on body weight, body composition and metabolic parameters after a 12-week nutritional intervention with a traditional Brazilian diet and extra virgin olive oil supplementation in severely obese patients.

Methods: A total of 149 severely obese individuals [body mass index (BMI) ≥ 35 kg/m] were randomized into three 12-week nutritional intervention groups - the extra virgin olive oil supplementation (OO) group ( = 50), the traditional Brazilian diet (DieTBra) group ( = 49), and the DieTBra plus extra virgin olive oil supplementation (DieTBra+OO) group (n = 50).

Background: This review aims to update the influences of sport modalities, sport performance, and non-exercise-related determinant, on eating patterns and nutrient intake outcomes among adolescent competitive athletes.

Methods: The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched for the last 20 years. Observational and intervention studies of all languages on eating patterns and nutrient intake in adolescent (10- to 19-year-old) competitive athletes were included.
