Background: The health crisis due to Covid-19 led to the search for therapeutics that could improve the evolution of the disease. Remdesivir, an antiviral that interferes with viral replication, was one of the first to be used for the treatment of this pathology.

Objective: To determine clinical course and mortality of patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia treated with remdesivir, in comparison of those who didn't receive the medication.

Miticidal Tools for Management of Southern Red Mites Infesting Southern Highbush Blueberries.

Tetranychid outbreaks have been detected since 2016 in southern highbush blueberries (SHB); however, it was not until 2019 that the southern red mite (SRM), (Acari: Tetranychidae) was confirmed as the pest causing severe bronzing and stunting, in multiple Florida and Georgia commercial blueberry plantings. To date, only three miticides (fenazaquin, fenpyroximate, and acequinocyl) have been registered for use in SHB and there are no clear guidelines on how to manage SRM in SHB. Similarly, there is no knowledge regarding the existence of natural enemies of SRM in SHB.

We conducted a prospective, observational, physiological study in a tertiary academic intensive care unit.

Internalizing Problems and Resilience in Primary School Students in Low and High Socioeconomic Vulnerability Establishments in Chile.

Background: The processes involved in this study were 2-fold. First, we analyzed the levels of resilience and internalized problems (defined as group of emotional symptoms) in children aged 9 to 12 years. The provision of hallway healthcare is a growing concern within contemporary healthcare systems. Hallway healthcare or hallway medicine is defined as the use of unconventional spaces, such as hallways, to provide patient care in the acute care setting. Negative effects associated with the prevalence of hallway healthcare may hinder the healing trajectory of vulnerable and ageing populations.

This paper aims to understand the meanings of food and nutrition policies for beneficiary mothers and for technicians designing and implementing said policies. The Grounded Theory method was employed. The data collection techniques adopted were the semi-structured interview and the focus group.

Estimation of changes in cyclic lung strain by electrical impedance tomography: Proof-of-concept study.

Rationale: Cyclic strain may be a determinant of ventilator-induced lung injury. The standard for strain assessment is the computed tomography (CT), which does not allow continuous monitoring and exposes to radiation. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is able to monitor changes in regional lung ventilation.

Injury to Southern Highbush Blueberries by Southern Red Mites and Management Using Various Miticides.

Reports of severe infestations caused by southern red mites (SRM), McGregor (Acari: Tetranychidae), have increased in recent years in southern highbush blueberries (SHB). Currently, there is little known about the management of tetranychids in SHB, and only two miticides (fenazaquin and fenpyroximate) have recently been labeled for use in SHB. has caused up to 80%-100% losses in some blueberry plantings, and growers are looking for management tools for this new pest of blueberries.

Reliability of the Service Trip Audit Tool to assess the quality of short-term medical missions.

Background: We aimed to assess the adherence of short-term medical missions (STMMs) operating in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to key best practices using the Service Trip Audit Tool (STAT) and to calculate the inter-rater reliability of the data points. This tool was based on a previously published inventory of 18 STMM best practices.

Insect pests that attempt to feed on the caterpillar-resistant maize genotype Mp708 encounter a potent, multipronged defense system that thwarts their invasion. First, these plants are on "constant alert" due to constitutively elevated levels of the phytohormone jasmonic acid that signals the plant to activate its defenses. The higher jasmonic acid levels trigger the expression of defense genes prior to herbivore attack so the plants are "primed" and respond with a faster and stronger defense.

Effective moisture diffusivity determination and mathematical modelling of the drying curves of the olive-waste cake.

Olive cake is an important agro industrial by-product with the dried cake being the input material of many applications areas. In this research, the drying kinetics of olive cake during convective dehydration at five temperatures (50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 degrees C) was investigated. Several empirical mathematical models were selected to describe experimental drying kinetics data, namely, Page, Modified Page, Henderson and Pabis, Modified Henderson and Pabis, Two-Terms, Logarithmic and Weibull.

Progressive facial hemiatrophy with associated osseous lesions.

Progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) is a rare condition characterized by the slow, progressive appearance of a unilateral facial atrophy that affects the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle and bone. We report the case of a 60-year-old female patient whose cutaneous symptoms commenced in 1987 in the form of a purplish erythema on the left side of her face and neck, which subsequently remitted giving rise to an indurated region in the left maxillary region. Since 1995 until the present day, she has developed facial hemiatrophy on the left side accompanied by progressive osseous reabsorption of the upper maxilla and left mandible with atrophy of soft tissue.

Mir1-CP, a novel defense cysteine protease accumulates in maize vascular tissues in response to herbivory.

When lepidopteran larvae feed on the insect-resistant maize genotype Mp708 there is a rapid accumulation of a defensive cysteine protease, Maize insect resistance 1-cysteine protease (Mir1-CP), at the feeding site. Silver-enhanced immunolocalization visualized with both light and transmission electron microscopy was used to determine the location of Mir1-CP in the maize leaf. The results indicated that Mir1-CP is localized predominantly in the phloem of minor and intermediate veins.

Here, two new mutant alleles of CDC25 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, cdc25-21 and cdc25-22, are described.

Effects of aging on C57BL/6J mice: an electrophysiological and morphological study.

Presbycusis is a progressive hearing loss associated with aging that manifests as deafness linked to cochlear morphological degeneration. The effects of aging on the auditory system were studied in C57BL/6J mice using electrophysiological (brainstem auditory evoked potentials; BAEP) and morphological techniques. Cochleae of animals aged 1, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 months old were used for that purpose.
