Article Synopsis
  • Chronic venous leg ulcers (CVUs) are a significant public health issue due to slow wound healing influenced by chronic inflammation; this study aims to assess a new treatment combining a carbohydrate polymer with zinc oxide and standard venous compression therapy.
  • Forty patients were divided into two groups: one used the new treatment alongside compression therapy, while the control group received only compression for eight weeks, with various blood and tissue samples taken to measure inflammation and immune response.
  • Results showed that the study group experienced greater ulcer area reduction, lower levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and improved tissue cell activity, indicating that the carbohydrate polymer with zinc oxide could effectively enhance CVU healing and quality of life.

Pebisut is a biological adhesive composed of naturally occurring carbohydrates combined with zinc oxide (ZnO) initially used as a coadjutant for healing of anastomoses. Likewise some works demonstrated that carbohydrate complexes exerts anti-inflammatory activity and it is widely known that ZnO modulate inflammation. However, the direct effects of Pebisut on isolated cells and acute inflammatory responses remained to be investigated.
