Hereditary angioedema (HAE) with C1 inhibitor deficiency is a genetic disorder that clinically manifests with attacks of angioedema in the subcutaneous and submucosal tissues, mainly in the extremities, abdomen, and upper airway. During attacks, vascular permeability is increased due to increased bradykinin (BK). This means that special therapies are needed for attacks that do not respond to traditional antiallergic therapies involving antihistamines, corticosteroids, and epinephrine.

Hypersensitivity to Anisakis is an increasingly prominent medical problem throughout the world, due to a better understanding of diseases induced by parasites and to modern culinary habits of eating raw or undercooked fish. We describe the case of a patient who presented epigastric pain, wheals, erythema, and pruritus 3 hours after the ingestion of fish. More than 200 larvae were obtained by endoscopy.

Drug-related rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, or drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS), is a life-threatening multiorgan systemic reaction characterized by rash, fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatitis, and leukocytosis with eosinophilia. Aromatic anticonvulsant drugs and allopurinol have been reported to be the most frequent eliciting agents. Our search of the literature revealed only 2 cases induced by piperacillin and 1 case by ceftriaxone.

Background: We investigated the usefulness of the bronchial challenge (BC) with lysine-acetylsalicylate (L-ASA) in the diagnosis of aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) using a protocol that combined both the oral challenge (OC) and the BC tests.

The last step of lignin biosynthesis in Zinnia elegans suspension cell cultures (SCCs) catalyzed by peroxidase (ZePrx) has been characterized. The k(3) values shown by ZePrx for the three monolignols revealed that sinapyl alcohol was the best substrate, and were proportional to their oxido/reduction potentials, signifying that these reactions are driven exclusively by redox thermodynamic forces. Feeding experiments demonstrate that cell wall lignification in SCCs is controlled by the rate of supply of H(2)O(2).
