Considering recent clinical and experimental evidence, expectations for using DCD-derived intestines have increased considerably. However, more knowledge about DCD procedure and long-term results after intestinal transplantation (ITx) is needed. We aimed to describe in detail a DCD procedure for ITx using normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) in a preclinical model.

Objectives: Mucosal appendicitis is defined by neutrophilic infiltration limited to the mucosa, with no transmural invasion; it is currently a controversial entity. The aim of our study was to determine whether mucosal appendicitis represents an early stage of acute appendicitis (AA) or should be considered a negative appendectomy.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed of children with suspected AA who underwent surgical treatment between 2017 and 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common complication after appendectomy in children, prompting a study to identify predictive factors, specifically focusing on the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR).
  • A retrospective study was conducted from 2017-2020, analyzing demographics, symptom onset, lab tests, and surgery details of 1,136 children who underwent appendectomy, revealing that higher NLR and longer symptom duration are linked to increased SSI.
  • The study found NLR to be a significant predictor of SSI, with a cut-off point of 9.8 yielding high sensitivity (77.8%) and specificity (72.7%), making it an effective marker for assessing infection risk post-surgery.

We describe the unusual case of a female patient with a history of two mature teratomas non-correlated in terms of location and occurrence. A 12-year-old girl presented at our consultation as a result of a growing tumor in the hypogastric region, with no further clinical signs. She had undergone surgery neonatally due to a mature cystic sacrococcygeal teratoma, which was fully removed.

Background: Surgical treatment of ileo-colic intussusception (ICI) has been reported as the second cause of emergency laparotomy in children. The performance of incidental appendectomy after surgical reduction is currently controversial. The aim is to analyse the outcomes of performing incidental appendectomy after surgical ICI reduction with or without associated bowel resection.

Objective:  Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an emerging inflammatory marker in abdominal pathologies. Ileocolic intussusception (ICI) involves a progressive intestinal inflammation, and the effectiveness of nonsurgical treatment (enema) might be related to the inflammation degree, although no previous studies have investigated this relationship. Our aim is to identify predictors of the need for surgical treatment in ICI.

Work helps to satisfy instrumental and transcendental needs. For people affected by armed conflict, work has an additional value because it helps them overcome the social disadvantage they suffer; however, topics such as meaningful work—MW—have been poorly studied in this type of population. Based on the above, we propose to analyze the relationship between meaningful work and satisfaction with life in one of the largest private supported employment programs for people involved in the armed conflict in Colombia.

Objective: To report a 15-y, single-center experience in the management and outcomes of ileocolic intussusception (ICI) episodes.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed in patients with ICI episodes, who were treated at a single quaternary referral center from 2005 to 2019. Data evaluated included patient demographics, clinical presentation, treatment modalities, hospital stay, complications, and outcomes.

Introduction: Perineal groove is an infrequent midline malformation. It is a humid, mucosal, non-keratinized groove located at the perineal midline, extending from the vulvar fourchette to the anterior anal border. It is rare and usually asymptomatic, and it heals spontaneously in most cases.

Background: MRS/MFS is a rare multisystem disorder with a poor prognosis. The high mortality rate of this syndrome is related to the severity of the associated gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary conditions, as most of them are not amenable to conventional medical and surgical treatments.

Methods: We report the case of a Romani girl with all the key clinical features of MRS/MFS, and a review of cases reported in the literature.

Background: Surgical intervention is usually a traumatic event that causes stress and anxiety in the pediatric patient and the family environment. To reduce the harmful effects of presurgical anxiety, parental presence during induction of anesthesia (PPIA) is one of the more notable interventions used in medical centers. However, data on this measure are difficult to evaluate and often face resistance from healthcare staff.

The "Signaling Theory" is a theoretical framework that investigates the content reported in sustainability reports, considering that through signaling, companies can influence stakeholders' perceptions, create a competitive advantage and positively impact their corporate image. Signals can be classified into three types: camouflage, intent and necessity. By analyzing their sustainability reports, this study presents a step-by-step approach to classifying sustainability practices reported by companies according to the aforementioned types of signals.

Background And Aims: The European Liver Transplant Registry (ELTR) has collected data on liver transplant procedures performed in Europe since 1968.

Approach And Results: Over a 50-year period (1968-2017), clinical and laboratory data were collected from 133 transplant centers and analyzed retrospectively (16,641 liver transplants in 14,515 children). Data were analyzed according to three successive periods (A, before 2000; B, 2000-2009; and C, since 2010), studying donor and graft characteristics and graft outcome.

To review our experience using sirolimus in a single centre paediatric intestinal transplantation cohort. Intestinal transplant patients with more than 3 months follow-up were divided into two groups according to their immunosuppression regimen: tacrolimus, (TAC group, n = 45 grafts) or sirolimus (SRL group, n = 38 grafts), which included those partially or completely converted from tacrolimus to sirolimus. The indications to switch were tacrolimus side effects and immunological complications.

Objective: We aimed to assess whether native spleen preservation during visceral transplantation (VT) affects graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) incidence.

Summary Background Data: GVHD is one of the most severe and frequently lethal hematological complications after VT procedures. Because there is no specific treatment for GVHD, it is imperative to develop a strategy to reduce donor lymphocyte engraftment and proliferation.

Introduction: Non-resectable liver tumors are one of the most frequent indications of pediatric liver transplantation. However, the usefulness of interventional techniques is still to be exploited. This is the case of a patient with a non-resectable liver sarcoma proposed for liver transplantation, which could be avoided as the tumor was fully resected following selective portal embolization combined with chemotherapy treatment.

Introduction: As a result of the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 respiratory virus in Wuhan in December 2019, the Spanish Government declared the state of emergency with restrictions such as stay-at-home lockdown. The objective of this study was to analyze emergency activity at a referral pediatric surgery unit in its territory and determine whether surgical pathologies had decreased or not.

Methods: A retrospective study of pediatric patients presenting at the emergency department and referred to the pediatric surgery unit from March 14, 2020 to April 20, 2020 was carried out.

Background: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have been proposed as a promising complement to standard immunosuppression in solid organ transplantation because of their immunomodulatory properties. The present work addresses the role of adipose-derived MSC (Ad-MSC) in an experimental model of acute rejection in small bowel transplantation (SBT).

Material/methods: Heterotopic allogeneic SBT was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the cost-effectiveness of routine ultrasounds before restarting oral tolerance in patients who have successfully undergone enema reduction for ileocolic intussusception (ICI).
  • A retrospective analysis of 366 patients revealed no significant differences in the recurrence rates of ICI between groups with and without ultrasound, despite group A experiencing longer hospital stays and more vomiting and bloody stools.
  • The conclusion suggests that routine ultrasounds in asymptomatic patients post-reduction do not lower re-intussusception risk and should not be routinely performed.
