Hypoxia initiates the neurosecretory response of the carotid body (CB) by inhibiting one or more potassium channels in the chemoreceptor cells. Oxygen-sensitive K(+) channels were first described in rabbit CB chemoreceptor cells, in which a transient outward K(+) current was reported to be reversibly inhibited by hypoxia. Although progress has been made to characterize this current with electrophysiological and pharmacological tools, no attempts have been made to identify which Kv channel proteins are expressed in rabbit CB chemoreceptor cells and to determine their contribution to the native O(2)-sensitive K(+) current.

Intracellular Ca(2+) stores in chemoreceptor cells of the rabbit carotid body: significance for chemoreception.

The notion that intracellular Ca(2+) (Ca(i)(2+)) stores play a significant role in the chemoreception process in chemoreceptor cells of the carotid body (CB) appears in the literature in a recurrent manner. However, the structural identity of the Ca(2+) stores and their real significance in the function of chemoreceptor cells are unknown. To assess the functional significance of Ca(i)(2+) stores in chemoreceptor cells, we have monitored 1) the release of catecholamines (CA) from the cells using an in vitro preparation of intact rabbit CB and 2) the intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) using isolated chemoreceptor cells; both parameters were measured in the absence or the presence of agents interfering with the storage of Ca(2+).

[Identification of 2 families with hereditary nonpolyposis colonic cancer (HNPCC) and the Amsterdam criteria. Relevance of the genealogic tree and follow-up].

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) diagnosis is based either on the so-called "Amsterdam 1 criteria" or "Amsterdam 2 criteria", which includes extracolonic neoplasms associated with Lynch II syndrome. Many families are suspected of having a hereditary predisposition to cancer and may benefit from close surveillance. We describe a family (family 1) with suspected HNPCC at the beginning who fulfilled the Amsterdam 1 criteria over the course of its follow-up.

Tumor markers at the time of recurrence in patients with germ cell tumors.

Background: alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) closely follow the course of germ cell tumors (GCTs) and are widely used for diagnosis, prognosis, and follow-up purposes. The objective of this study was to assess the concordance of tumor markers at the time of diagnosis and recurrence.

Methods: The authors reviewed the records of 794 patients with GCTs treated in three Spanish hospitals from 1977-1996 and analyzed the concordance between AFP, HCG, and LDH levels at diagnosis and first and second recurrence.

Purpose: Percutaneous nephroscopy is usually performed with the patient prone, which is uncomfortable for the patient and does not prevent damage to the colon. We assess the possibility of performing percutaneous nephroscopy using local anesthesia with the patient supine, and evaluate the advantages and complications.

Materials And Methods: A total of 557 consecutive percutaneous nephroscopies were attempted in 221 men and 242 women in the supine position.

Effects of almitrine bismesylate on the ionic currents of chemoreceptor cells from the carotid body.

Almitrine is a drug used in the treatment of hypoxemic chronic lung diseases such as bronchitis and emphysema because it is a potent stimulant of the carotid bodies in human and different animal species that produces a long-lasting enhancement of alveolar ventilation, ameliorating arterial blood gases. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in 12 patients (5 boys and 7 girls) with Wilms' tumor, aged 9 months to 9.5 years, with special reference to the clinical symptoms and signs.

Cellular mechanisms of oxygen chemoreception in the carotid body.

The carotid bodies (CB) are arterial chemoreceptors that by sensing changes of arterial PO2, PCO2 and pH can initiate and modify ventilatory and cardiovascular reflexes in order to maintain PO2, PCO2 and pH within physiological levels. It is now generally accepted that the glomus or type I cells of the CB are the transducers of hypoxic stimuli, and relay chemosensory information to the brainstem via neurotransmitter release at synaptic contacts with afferent terminals of the carotid sinus nerve. This article reviews the mechanisms of the O2-sensing process at the cellular level.

[Malignant pleural mesothelioma: clinical characteristics, prognostic factors and treatment].

Malignant pleural mesothelioma soon leads to death no matter what type of treatment is provided. We discuss the clinical signs, prognostic factors and treatment given in 41 cases managed over the past 13 years in our oncology department. 32% had been exposed to asbestos, 61% were 60 years old or younger, 71% had a Karnofsky's index > or = 80% and 63% were stage I (Butchart).

Local calcium transients triggered by single L-type calcium channel currents in cardiac cells.

Excitation-contraction coupling was studied in mammalian cardiac cells in which the opening probability of L-type calcium (Ca2+) channels was reduced. Confocal microscopy during voltage-clamp depolarization revealed distinct local transients in the concentration of intracellular calcium ions ([Ca2+]i). When voltage was varied, the latency to occurrence and the relative probability of occurrence of local [Ca2+]i transients varied as predicted if Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was linked tightly to Ca2+ flux through L-type Ca2+ channels but not to that through the Na-Ca exchanger or to average [Ca2+]i.

[10 Year follow up of chemotherapy and surgery on the second laparotomy in advanced ovarian cancer].

Background: Advanced ovarian neoplasm has bad prognosis. There is little knowledge as to the effect of surgical and chemotherapy treatments on long-term survival.

Methods: Seventy-two patients with advanced epithelial ovary carcinoma (53 stage III and 19 stage IV) were treated according to a treatment regimen with reduction surgery, five cycles of chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, adriamycin and cisplatin (CAP) followed by second revision laparotomy.
