Unsymmetrical bis-cyclometalated dicarboxylato complexes (-6-32)-[Pt(tpy)(OCR)] [tpy = cyclometalated 2-(-tolyl)pyridine, R = -Bu (), Me (), Ph (), CF ()], are obtained from the reaction of -[Pt(tpy)] with the appropriate PhI(OCR) reagent. Treatment of complexes of this type with different carboxylates (R'CO) results in the formation of mixed-carboxylato derivatives, namely (-6-43)-[Pt(tpy)(OCMe)(OCR')] [R' = -Bu (), CF (), Ph ()], (-6-34)-[Pt(tpy)(OCCF)(OCR')] [R' = -Bu (), Me (), Ph ()], and (-6-34)-[Pt(tpy)(OC--Bu)(OCMe)] (). Irradiation of - and - with UV light (365 nm) in MeCN gives 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl pivalate (), 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl acetate () or 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl benzoate () as the major photoproduct from most complexes, resulting from a reductive C-O coupling between a tpy ligand and a carboxylato ligand.

The GMRx2 trial in adults with high blood pressure (BP) demonstrated that after 12 weeks, a low-dose single-pill combination of telmisartan, amlodipine, and indapamide significantly reduced BP levels compared to several dual combinations (telmisartan with amlodipine, telmisartan with indapamide, or amlodipine with indapamide). Adverse events did not differ between the groups. This novel therapeutic option could improve high BP control.

In recent years, the ageing population has increasingly grown. This process carries a range of pathophysiological changes involving alterations in the skeletal muscle, vascular endothelium and brain function, becoming an important risk factor for developing cognitive disorders and cardiovascular diseases. With ageing, there is a decrease in muscle mass and muscle strength, and a relationship between muscle strength decrease and cognitive decline has been shown.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, particularly affecting patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) who experience worse outcomes due to inflammation and endothelial dysfunction.* ! -
  • The study investigates the role of K1.3 channel blockers in reducing intimal hyperplasia and improving metabolic dysfunction in a T2DM mouse model, focusing on the macrophage K1.3 channels as potential therapeutic targets.* ! -
  • Results indicate that K1.3 channel expression is increased in macrophages from T2DM mice, especially in females, but these channels primarily influence cell migration rather than metabolic function or phagocytosis.* !

In this work, we explore a new dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) method to selectively separate chemical species of Cd and Zn in saline waters. It is based on the use of the magnetic ionic liquid (MIL) methyltrioctylammonium tetrachloroferrate ([N][FeCl]), which allows an efficient and environmentally friendly extraction of the target species. In addition, the paramagnetic component in the MIL simplifies the separation step required in DLLME, allowing for fast separation and recovery of the extracted species with a magnet, without a centrifugation step.

Essential hypertension (HT) is a highly prevalent cardiovascular disease of unclear physiopathology. Pharmacological studies suggest that purinergic P2Y6 receptors (P2ry6) play important roles in cardiovascular function and may contribute to angiotensin II (AgtII) pathophysiological effects. Here, we tested the hypothesis that functional coupling between P2ry6 and AgtII receptors mediates altered vascular reactivity in HT.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal cancers with patients having unresectable or metastatic disease at diagnosis, with poor prognosis and very short survival. Given that genetic variation within autophagy-related genes influences autophagic flux and susceptibility to solid cancers, we decided to investigate whether 55,583 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within 234 autophagy-related genes could influence the risk of developing PDAC in three large independent cohorts of European ancestry including 12,754 PDAC cases and 324,926 controls. The meta-analysis of these populations identified, for the first time, the association of the BID variant with an increased risk of developing the disease (OR = 1.

Blood pressure (BP) is a key contributor to the lifetime risk of preclinical organ damage and cardiovascular disease. Traditional clinic-based BP readings are typically measured infrequently and under standardized/resting conditions and therefore do not capture BP values during normal everyday activity. Therefore, current hypertension guidelines emphasize the importance of incorporating out-of-office BP measurement into strategies for hypertension diagnosis and management.

Co-twin studies are an elegant and powerful design that allows controlling for the effect of confounding variables, including genetic and a range of environmental factors. There are several approaches to carry out this design. One of the methods commonly used, when contrasting continuous variables, is to calculate difference scores between members of a twin pair on two associated variables, in order to analyse the covariation of such differences.
