The cognitive functions of people over 60 years of age have been diminished, due to the structural and functional changes that the brain has during aging. The most evident changes are at the behavioral and cognitive level, with decreased learning capacity, recognition memory, and motor incoordination. University campuses are normally constituted of large buildings responsible for high energy demand, and are also important as demonstration sites for new technologies and systems. This paper presents the results of achieving energy sustainability in a testbed composed of a set of four buildings that constitute the Telecommunications Engineering School of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. In the paper, after characterizing the consumption of university buildings for a complete year, different options to achieve more sustainable use of energy are presented, considering the integration of renewable generation sources, namely photovoltaic generation, and monitoring and controlling electricity demand.

Galectin-9 levels have been reported to be altered in several cancer types, but the mechanism that regulates the expression of Galectin-9 has not been clarified. Galectin-9 is encoded by the LGALS9 gene, which gives rise to eight mRNA variants. Constitutional complex chromosomal rearrangements (CCRs) are rare events that typically involve 2 or more chromosomes with at least 3 breakpoints and can result in normal or abnormal phenotypes depending on whether they disturb the euchromatic neighborhood. Here, we report an unusual balanced CCR involving chromosomes 1, 9, and 10 that causes an unbalanced karyotype in a severely affected toddler. The CCR was initially reported as a maternal 2-way translocation but was reclassified as a 3-way translocation after a microarray analysis of the propositus revealed the involvement of another chromosome not identified by G-banding in his phenotypically normal mother.

This study shows the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the muscle and hepatopancreas of Pacific white shrimps, Litopenaeus vannamei, cultured during 2010 in 26 commercial farms of the three main producer states of the Mexican NW, Sonora, Sinaloa, and Nayarit and compares the results to those obtained in 2000 using samples collected in16 farms of the same states. No significant changes were detected in Cd concentrations, but the 2010 Zn levels were significantly higher in all states in the hepatopancreas and in Sinaloa in the case of the muscle. Cu showed a tendency to higher hepatopancreas values in 2010, but differences were significant only in Sonora and for the global mean value.

The synthesis of biodiesel fuel from lipids (vegetable oils and animal fats) has gained in importance as a possible source of renewable non-fossil energy in an attempt to reduce our dependence on petroleum-based fuels. The catalytic processes commonly used for the production of biodiesel fuel present a series of limitations and drawbacks, among them the high energy consumption required for complex purification operations and undesirable side reactions. The main objective of this study was the evaluation of the impact of different sources of organic waste (used as an N source) on soil quality (as measured by CO(2) release) and N transformation processes (available inorganic N forms) in a short-term field study of an almond tree plantation. Three compost types were used as organic fertilisers: EC compost constituted from organic agriculture farm (vegetables and manure), SC compost formed from sewage sludge and pruning waste composted, and XC compost comprised a mixture of composted sewage sludge plus slurry and manure from an intensive pig farm. The two compost doses were compared according to N content, and a high dose (H), corresponding to 210 kg N ha(-1), and a low dose (L), equivalent to 105 kg N ha(-1), were used.

The increasing order of the mean concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Zn in the tissues of Mugil cephalus of seven coastal lagoons of Sinaloa State (NW Mexico) was liver > gills > muscle, while for Pb it was gills > muscle ≥ liver. There were no differences between the mean concentrations of Cd and Pb of the three tissues determined in the samples of the seven lagoons and, although there were some significant differences, there was no indication of a latitude-related trend in the distribution of Cu and Zn: the Cu content of the muscle tended to be higher in the northern than in the southern lagoons, although in the case of the gills the highest and lowest mean values indicated an opposite trend, with the highest and lowest values in one southern and one northern lagoon. In the case of the liver, there were no differences and no indication of a regional trend.

The lagoonal system Altata-Ensenada del Pabellón supports important traditional fisheries and mollusc cultures and receives urban and agricultural effluents. The annual mean Cd contents of the oyster and mussel Crassostrea gigas and Mytella strigata of the inner mangrove swamps were higher than that of the clam Megapitaria squalida, which lives in areas under marine influence. Crassostrea corteziensis had the highest Cu and Zn contents, showing that it is a strong accumulator of both metals and especially of Zn, and there were no significant differences in the Pb content of the three species.
