The role of inflammation in the bile duct injury has been suggested. Regarding, this study aims to determine the relationship between preoperative White Blood Cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (pNLR) with post-operative short- and long-term outcomes in patients undergoing a hepaticojejunostomy (HJ) for a bile duct injury (BDI) repair. This prospective longitudinal study (R-2022-3001-127) enrolled fifty patients.

Optical anapoles excited by UV-A illumination.

We report the excitation of optical anapole states at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. Numerical simulations indicate that TiO nano-rectangles with varying length-to-width ratios can support such modes within the 350-380 nm range. We further propose a two-dimensional periodic arrangement of these nano-rectangles deposited atop a fused silica substrate.

Background: It is known that the immune system is dysregulated in schizophrenia, having a state similar to chronic neuroinflammation. The origin of this process is unknown, but it is known that T and B lymphocytes, which are components of the adaptive immune system, play an important role in the pathogenic mechanisms of schizophrenia.

Methods: We analysed the membrane of PBMCs from patients diagnosed with schizophrenia through proteomic analysis (n = 5 schizophrenia and n = 5 control).

Introduction: Endocrinology and Nutrition (EyN) is an outpatient and hospital medical specialty. This study aims to understand the evolution of the activity of interdepartmental consultation (IC) carried out by EyN in hospitalization floor of a third level hospital, comparing its evolution with other medical specialties, and comparing endocrine IC with nutritional IC.

Material And Methods: Longitudinal and retrospective study which analyzes IC notes of EyN and other medical specialties between 01-01-2013 and 31-12-2022.

A 17-month longitudinal surface sampling study carried out on public transport vehicles operating in England during the COVID-19 pandemic identified low levels of SARS-CoV-2 RNA contamination.

Aims: To monitor severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA contamination in vehicles operating in England during the pandemic, to better understand transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 on public transport.

Methods And Results: We collected 1314 surface samples between December 2020 and April 2022 on trains and buses managed by five different transport operators. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA was investigated through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

We present the clinical case of a 56-year-old former smoker female, with a family history of maternal ulcerative colitis and personal history of ankylosing spondylitis treated with Ixekizumab for 3 months, who was admitted for fever, left iliac fossa pain and diarrhea without pathological products of 2 weeks of evolution. Abdominopelvic computed tomography scan identified pancolitis. Complete colonoscopy revealed continuous involvement of the proximal colon (right and transverse colon presented deep ulcerations and mucosal friability) with preservation of the terminal ileum.

In Spain, from October 10th, 2023, the FreeStyle Libre 2 system offers the possibility to automatically changed from isCGM to rtCGM with a system update. Our study aimed to evaluate the glucometric before and after that date. We didn't find significant changes in TIR, however time of use increased and TBR decreased.

A story of viral co-infection, co-transmission and co-feeding in ticks: how to compute an invasion reproduction number.

With a single circulating vector-borne virus, the basic reproduction number incorporates contributions from tick-to-tick (co-feeding), tick-to-host and host-to-tick transmission routes. With two different circulating vector-borne viral strains, resident and invasive, and under the assumption that co-feeding is the only transmission route in a tick population, the invasion reproduction number depends on whether the model system of ordinary differential equations possesses the property of neutrality. We show that a simple model, with two populations of ticks infected with one strain, resident or invasive, and one population of co-infected ticks, does not have Alizon's neutrality property.

Background And Aims: Structural colour is responsible for the remarkable metallic blue colour seen in the leaves of several plants. Species belonging to only ten genera have been investigated to date, revealing four photonic structures responsible for structurally coloured leaves. One of these is the helicoidal cell wall, known to create structural colour in the leaf cells of five taxa.

Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma of the pancreas.

We present the clinical case of a 21-year-old male with abdominal pain in the left hypochondrium radiating to the ipsilateral lumbar area and a weight loss of 2kg over a month, secondary to a large palpable intra-abdominal mass in the examination. TAC revealed a large solid mass with necrotic-cystic component which depended of the pancreas, infiltrated the spleen, enveloped the celiac trunk and affected to the splenic vases. Inmunohistochemical and molecular study confirmed the diagnosis extraosseus Ewing sarcoma (EES).

Background: Many UK hospitals rely heavily on natural ventilation as their main source of airflow in patient wards. This method of ventilation can have cost and energy benefits, but it may lead to unpredictable flow patterns between indoor spaces, potentially leading to the unexpected transport of infectious material to other connecting zones. However, the effects of weather conditions on airborne transmission are often overlooked.

The reproduction number and its probability distribution for stochastic viral dynamics.

We consider stochastic models of individual infected cells. The reproduction number, , is understood as a random variable representing the number of new cells infected by one initial infected cell in an otherwise susceptible (target cell) population. Variability in results partly from heterogeneity in the viral burst size (the number of viral progeny generated from an infected cell during its lifetime), which depends on the distribution of cellular lifetimes and on the mechanism of virion release.

Local recurrence and metastatic disease in pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas.

Purpose: To evaluate the rate of recurrence among patients with pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas (PGLs; together PPGLs) and to identify predictors of recurrence (local recurrence and/or metastatic disease).

Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included information of 303 patients with PPGLs in follow-up in 19 Spanish tertiary hospitals. Recurrent disease was defined by the development of local recurrence and/or metastatic disease after initial complete surgical resection.

Social Distance Approximation on Public Transport Using Stereo Depth Camera and Passenger Pose Estimation.

In order to effectively balance enforced guidance/regulation during a pandemic and limit infection transmission, with the necessity for public transportation services to remain safe and operational, it is imperative to understand and monitor environmental conditions and typical behavioural patterns within such spaces. Social distancing ability on public transport as well as the use of advanced computer vision techniques to accurately measure this are explored in this paper. A low-cost depth-sensing system is deployed on a public bus as a means to approximate social distancing measures and study passenger habits in relation to social distancing.

Multi-variate model of T cell clonotype competition and homeostasis.

Diversity of the naive T cell repertoire is maintained by competition for stimuli provided by self-peptides bound to major histocompatibility complexes (self-pMHCs). We extend an existing bi-variate competition model to a multi-variate model of the dynamics of multiple T cell clonotypes which share stimuli. In order to understand the late-time behaviour of the system, we analyse: (i) the dynamics until the extinction of the first clonotype, (ii) the time to the first extinction event, (iii) the probability of extinction of each clonotype, and (iv) the size of the surviving clonotypes when the first extinction event takes place.

Dysphagia secondary to neuroendocrine carcinoma: a rare esophageal tumor.

We present two clinical cases, a 68-year-old male and a 55-year-old female, who are being studied for progressive solid food dysphagia. The initial gastroscopy revealed a polypoid lesion in the first case and a partially stenosing lesion in the second case. Both lesions were located in the mid-esophagus and presented a normal mucosa.

Risk factors for intraoperative hypertensive crisis in patients with pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas.

Purpose: To identify presurgical and surgical risk factors for intraoperative hypertensive crisis in patients with pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas (PGLs) (PPGLs).

Methods: Retrospective multicenter cohort study of patients with PPGLs from 18 tertiary hospitals. Intraoperative hypertensive crisis was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) greater than 200 mmHg lasting more than 1 min and postoperative hypertensive crisis as SBP greater than 180 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) greater than 110 mmHg.
