This study aimed to evaluate central measures of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), oxidative damage and total antioxidant capacity in rats submitted to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), as well as to investigate the relationship between BDNF levels and differentially processes. For this purpose, male Wistar rats were submitted to CUMS for six weeks.

Human gammaherpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is the etiologic agent of Kaposi's sarcoma, multicentric Castleman's disease and primary effusion lymphoma. Like other herpesviruses, the HHV-8 may exhibit latent or lytic cycle, both regulated by viral and host factors. Regarding host factors, we analysed the association of polymorphisms in NFkB1 promoter (NFkB1-94 ins/del ATTG) and NFκBIA gene (NFκBIA 3'UTR A→G) with the development of antibodies against latent or lytic antigens from HHV-8.

Are there differences in nutrient intake of Brazilian adults according to weight status?

It was assessed the intake and prevalence of inadequate nutrient intake according to weight status among Brazilian adults from urban areas (n=16,198) evaluated in the Brazilian National Dietary Survey (NDS - 2008-2009), that obtained food records from two non-consecutive days. The prevalence of inadequate nutrient intake according to weight status was estimated based on Brazilian and international recommendations, in which usual intake was estimated applying the National Cancer Institute method. From 14 nutrients evaluated, six differed according to weight status in men, and only two among women.

Background: Renal fibrosis is the result of the interaction of cellular and molecular pathways, which is induced by sustained glomerular injury and involves the podocytes and multiple profibrotic factors. In this study, we investigated the correlation of the mRNA expression of podocyte proteins and profibrotic factors with renal fibrosis measured in renal biopsies of patients with primary and secondary glomerulopathies.

Methods: Eighty-four adult patients with primary or secondary glomerular diseases and 12 controls were included.

Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency Leading to Liver Cirrhosis: a Case Report of a Rare Variant Mutation.

Lysosomal acid lipase deficiency is a poorly diagnosed genetic disorder, leading to accumulation of cholesterol esters and triglycerides in the liver, with progression to chronic liver disease, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular complications. Lack of awareness on diagnosis of this condition may hamper specific treatment, which consists on enzymatic replacement. It may prevent the progression of liver disease and its complications.

A humanized MDCK cell line for the efficient isolation and propagation of human influenza viruses.

Here, we developed hCK, a Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line that expresses high levels of human influenza virus receptors and low levels of avian virus receptors. hCK cells supported human A/H3N2 influenza virus isolation and growth much more effectively than conventional MDCK or human virus receptor-overexpressing (AX4) cells. A/H3N2 viruses propagated in hCK cells also maintained higher genetic stability than those propagated in MDCK and AX4 cells.

Separation of anthocyanins extracted from red cabbage by adsorption onto chitosan films.

Anthocyanin pigments are suitable as natural dyes for food, cosmetics and dietary supplements, due to the demand for healthier products and their antioxidant properties. This work aimed to extract the anthocyanin pigments from red cabbage and its separation of the solution by adsorption operation onto chitosan films. The anthocyanin was extracted from red cabbage in water hot at 90 °C by 15 min.

Objective: It is still unclear how temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with and without hippocampal atrophy (HA) affects cortical language distribution. We aimed to investigate the role of the hippocampus on language lateralization, activation pattern, and functional connectivity (FC) in patients with TLE.

Methods: We investigated 93 patients with TLE-divided into right HA (RHA), left HA (LHA), and negative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (non-HA)-and 101 controls using a semantic-language functional MRI (fMRI) task and the Boston Naming Test (BNT).
