Prolonged activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sustained increase of glucocorticoids have been evidenced in major depression and are related to changes involving neurotrophins and markers of oxidative stress in response to inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate central measures of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), oxidative damage and total antioxidant capacity in rats submitted to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), as well as to investigate the relationship between BDNF levels and differentially processes. For this purpose, male Wistar rats were submitted to CUMS for six weeks.

Objective: Analyze data regarding total knee arthroplasty (TKA) carried out by the Public Health System (SUS) in the state of São Paulo from 2003 to 2010 and determine the projections expected for 2030.

Methods: A cross-sectional study (observational). We analyzed 10,952 patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (PTKA) and revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA) in the state of São Paulo between 2003 and 2010.

Human gammaherpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is the etiologic agent of Kaposi's sarcoma, multicentric Castleman's disease and primary effusion lymphoma. Like other herpesviruses, the HHV-8 may exhibit latent or lytic cycle, both regulated by viral and host factors. Regarding host factors, we analysed the association of polymorphisms in NFkB1 promoter (NFkB1-94 ins/del ATTG) and NFκBIA gene (NFκBIA 3'UTR A→G) with the development of antibodies against latent or lytic antigens from HHV-8.

It was assessed the intake and prevalence of inadequate nutrient intake according to weight status among Brazilian adults from urban areas (n=16,198) evaluated in the Brazilian National Dietary Survey (NDS - 2008-2009), that obtained food records from two non-consecutive days. The prevalence of inadequate nutrient intake according to weight status was estimated based on Brazilian and international recommendations, in which usual intake was estimated applying the National Cancer Institute method. From 14 nutrients evaluated, six differed according to weight status in men, and only two among women.

Background/aims: Laparoscopy is a widespread surgical approach for many urological conditions. Achieving prof-ciency in laparoscopic surgery requires considerable effort due to the steep learning curve. Several residency programs include standardized laparoscopic training periods in their curricula.

Background: Renal fibrosis is the result of the interaction of cellular and molecular pathways, which is induced by sustained glomerular injury and involves the podocytes and multiple profibrotic factors. In this study, we investigated the correlation of the mRNA expression of podocyte proteins and profibrotic factors with renal fibrosis measured in renal biopsies of patients with primary and secondary glomerulopathies.

Methods: Eighty-four adult patients with primary or secondary glomerular diseases and 12 controls were included.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the association between the inflammatory potential of diet and sleep parameters in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the dietary inflammatory index (DII) at predicting sleep pattern.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with mild to severe OSA were included in the study (N = 296). Sleep pattern was analyzed by polysomnography and subjective sleep parameters.

Nanomedicine is an emerging research area which has brought new possibilities and promising applications in image, diagnosis, and treatment. Nanoparticles (NPs) for medicinal purposes can be made of several material types such as silica, carbon, different polymers, and metals as silver, copper, titanium, and gold. Gold NPs (AuNPs) are the most studied and used, mostly due to their characteristics including simple preparation, controllable size and distribution, biocompatibility, good acceptance of surface modifications, and specific surface plasmon resonance (SPR).

Lysosomal acid lipase deficiency is a poorly diagnosed genetic disorder, leading to accumulation of cholesterol esters and triglycerides in the liver, with progression to chronic liver disease, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular complications. Lack of awareness on diagnosis of this condition may hamper specific treatment, which consists on enzymatic replacement. It may prevent the progression of liver disease and its complications.

Objective: Investigate Vitamin D (VD) effect on the Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), oxidative damage and behavioral tests in animals subjected to Intracerebroventicular injection of Streptozotocin (ICV-STZ) simulating a Sporadic Dementia of Alzheimer's Type (SDAT) and treated with VD (21 days).

Methods: Animals were divided into eight groups: Vehicle, VD12.5 μg/kg, VD42 μg/kg, VD125 μg/kg, STZ, STZ+VD12.

Here, we developed hCK, a Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line that expresses high levels of human influenza virus receptors and low levels of avian virus receptors. hCK cells supported human A/H3N2 influenza virus isolation and growth much more effectively than conventional MDCK or human virus receptor-overexpressing (AX4) cells. A/H3N2 viruses propagated in hCK cells also maintained higher genetic stability than those propagated in MDCK and AX4 cells.

Anthocyanin pigments are suitable as natural dyes for food, cosmetics and dietary supplements, due to the demand for healthier products and their antioxidant properties. This work aimed to extract the anthocyanin pigments from red cabbage and its separation of the solution by adsorption operation onto chitosan films. The anthocyanin was extracted from red cabbage in water hot at 90 °C by 15 min.

Objective: It is still unclear how temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with and without hippocampal atrophy (HA) affects cortical language distribution. We aimed to investigate the role of the hippocampus on language lateralization, activation pattern, and functional connectivity (FC) in patients with TLE.

Methods: We investigated 93 patients with TLE-divided into right HA (RHA), left HA (LHA), and negative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (non-HA)-and 101 controls using a semantic-language functional MRI (fMRI) task and the Boston Naming Test (BNT).
