The inbred rat strains Lewis (LEW) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and the outbred rat lines Floripa H and L, which were selectively bred for high and low locomotion in the central area of the open field (OF) test, respectively, have been proposed as experimental tools to study anxiety. The behavioral characterization of rodent strains in different studies and laboratories can provide unreplicable results even when genotypes are kept constant and environmental control is maximized. In the present study, the influence of common laboratory environmental variables and their interaction with genotype on the results of behavioral tests of anxiety/emotionality were investigated. To this end, the inbred rat strains Lewis (LEW) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), which are known to differ for numerous emotionality-related behaviors, were tested in the open field (OF), elevated plus maze (EPM) and black/white box (BWB), while three environmental factors were systematically controlled and analyzed: (1) the experimenter handling the animal (familiar or unfamiliar); (2) the position of the home cage (top or bottom shelf of the rack) and (3) the behavioral state of the animal immediately before the test (arousal or rest).

A hospital-based magnetic guidance system (MGS) was installed to assist a physician in navigating catheters and guide wires during interventional cardiac and neurosurgical procedures. The objective of this study is to examine the performance of this magnetic field-guided navigation system. Our results show that the system's radiological imaging components produce images with quality similar to that produced by other modern fluoroscopic devices.

The role of pair housing in the modulation of anxiety-like behaviour in socially and physiologically stressed mice was investigated. The protocol of psychosocial stress consisted of submitting male adult mice to daily social confrontation with a male conspecific for a period of thirteen days. In an attempt to study a possible effect of pair housing as a social support, each male mouse was housed with a female throughout the period of experimentation, except during the agonistic interactions.

The inhibiting activity of triterpenoids isolated from the methanolic extract of Pourouma guianensis (Moraceae) leaves is described for promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis. Whereas the fractions containing apigenin, friedelin, epi-friedelinol, arjunolic acid, hyptatic acid B, stigmasterol and sitosterol were of no or relatively low inhibitory activity, fractions containing tormentic acid, 2alpha,3beta-dihydroxyursan-12-en-28-oic acid, 2alpha,3beta-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid were very potent in inhibiting promastigote growth at 100 microg/ml. Of the eleven isolated compounds, however, only ursolic acid and oleanolic acid showed high activity against intracellular amastigotes (IC50 value = 27 microg/ml and 11 microg/ml, respectively), which was superior to the control drug Glucantime (IC50 value = 83 microg/ml).

Clinical treatment failures of the hydroxynaphthoquinone atovaquone or its combination with proguanil (Malarone) in Plasmodium falciparum malaria has been recently documented. Objective: One concern with respect to stent procedures performed to treat patients with intracranial lesions is the fate of normal major arterial branches after stents are placed across them. Because most of these lesions occur at vessel bifurcations or at branch points, a normal major branch often arises near the lesion and may be difficult to avoid during stent positioning.
