Purpose: To assess long-term vascular density measured by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in former preterm children with history of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) with and without need of laser treatment.

Methods: This observational study included former preterm children that developed ROP stage 2 or 3. Infants were divided in two groups according to previous need of laser treatment, and underwent a complete ophthalmologic evaluation, including assessment of macular morphologic and vascular parameters by OCT-A.

The "tubulin code" combines different α/β-tubulin isotypes with several post-translational modifications (PTMs) to generate microtubule diversity in cells. During cell division, specific microtubule populations in the mitotic spindle are differentially modified, but only recently, the functional significance of the tubulin code, with particular emphasis on the role specified by tubulin PTMs, started to be elucidated. Camphor is an aromatic terpene compound found in the essential oils of many plants, which has been used for centuries as a herbal medicine, especially in children. However, many studies have shown that camphor may have major side effects, including neurological manifestation, such as seizures. In the present study, we investigated the electrocorticographic patterns of seizures induced by camphor in male adult Wistar rats.

Myasthenia Gravis Related to Thymic Carcinoma: A Case Study.

Myasthenia gravis and thymoma are often presented in association with ∼10% of myasthenic cases having concomitant thymoma. Thymic carcinoma is one of the rarest/aggressive human epithelial tumors and has no correlation with myasthenia gravis hitherto. Here is provided a clinical case and review of literature on a very rare association of thymic carcinoma (with no sign of thymoma) and myasthenia gravis (antiacetylcholine receptor antibody positive).

Objective: Governments worldwide have been implementing interventions aimed at improving citizens' dietary habits. Examining how individuals perceive these interventions is relevant for promoting future policies in this area, as well as informing the way they are designed and implemented. In the current study, we focused on interventions aimed at reducing sugar intake in Portugal, given the current high sugar consumption patterns in the population.

Effects of antidepressants in the reproduction of aquatic organisms: a meta-analysis.

Pharmaceuticals are widespread contaminants across the aquatic systems and despite the role that these compounds play in society today, little is known about their effects in aquatic organisms once they are released into the environment. This study aims to provide quantitative insight on the effects of antidepressants on the reproduction of fish and crustaceans with a multilevel meta-analysis. A systematic literature search identified 19 studies investigating effects of antidepressant exposure in fish or crustaceans' reproduction, according to specific selection criteria.

Blood flow simulations in patient-specific geometries of the carotid artery: A systematic review.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) are currently widely applied in the study of blood flow parameters and their alterations under pathological conditions, which are important indicators for diagnosis of atherosclerosis. In this manuscript, a systematic review of the published literature was conducted, according to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, on the simulation studies of blood flow in patient-specific geometries of the carotid artery bifurcation. Scopus, PubMed and ScienceDirect databases were used in the literature search, which was completed on the 3rd of August 2020.

Avoidable environmental disasters and infant health: Evidence from a mining dam collapse in Brazil.

We study the health consequences of one of the largest environmental disasters of the world mining industry, which largely stemmed from regulatory failure. Exploiting the timing and location of the Mariana mine tailings dam collapse in Brazil, we show that in utero exposure to the tragedy significantly reduced birth weight and increased infant mortality. The adverse effects were stronger for infants born to less educated and nonmarried mothers.

Cost-effectiveness of edoxaban vs low-molecular-weight heparin and warfarin for cancer-associated thrombosis in Brazil.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the second leading cause of death in cancer patients. In Brazil, even though low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is the gold standard of care for the management of cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT), its cost limits its use and therefore warfarin is commonly prescribed. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), such as edoxaban, have been introduced as an alternative in this setting.
