The relevance of the hemodialysis procedure is increasing worldwide due to the growing number of patients suffering from chronic kidney disease. Taking into account the structure of dialysis polymer membranes is an important aspect in their development to achieve the required performance of hemodialyzers. We propose a new mathematical model of mass transfer that allows hollow-fiber membrane structural parameters to be taken into account in simulating the clearance () of hemodialyzers in a way that does not require difficult to achieve close approximation to the exact geometry of the membrane porous structure.

Rats in the first of three experiments reduced running speeds when they encountered four evenly spaced damaged rungs either always placed on the first or second half of the ladder (the break-a-way (BW) phase) but quickly recovered to their baseline (BL) levels when damaged rungs where replaced with intact rungs (the recovery phase). Rats previously exposed to damaged rungs over the first half of the ladder increased their speeds above BL on its second "safer" half during the recovery phase, a delayed "relief-like" positive contrast effect.

Induction of resistance of oral anaerobes to the effects of human beta-defensin 1 (hbetaD-1) to hbetaD-4 was investigated by pretreating cells with either sublethal levels of defensins or environmental factors, followed by a challenge with lethal levels of defensins. Cultures of Porphyromonas gingivalis were (i) pretreated with defensins at 1 ng/ml, (ii) heated to 42 degrees C (heat stress), (iii) exposed to normal atmosphere (oxidative stress), or (iv) exposed to 1 mM hydrogen peroxide (peroxide stress). Periodontitis is considered a consequence of a pathogenic microbial infection at the periodontal site and host susceptibility factors. Periodontal research supports the association of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Bacteroides forsythus, and periodontitis; however, causality has not been demonstrated.
