Tongue cancer at a young age demonstrates an increase in incidence, aggressiveness, and poor response to therapy. Classic etiological factors for head and neck tumors such as tobacco, alcohol, and human papillomavirus are not related to early-onset tongue cancer. Mechanisms of development and progression of this cancer remain unclear.

Evaluation of HER2/neu Expression in Metastatic Axillary Lymph Node Tissue of Breast Cancer Patients Using [99mTc]Tc-(HE)3-G3.

Anatomic visualization and molecular typing of metastatic regional lymph nodes in breast cancer patients are a serious clinical challenge in modern oncology. According to the results of previous studies, [99mTc]Tc-(HE)3-G3 has proven to be a promising diagnostic agent in differentiating the HER2/neu receptor status in primary breast tumors ( < 0.05, Mann-Whitney test).

Evaluation of Approaches for the Assessment of HER2 Expression in Breast Cancer by Radionuclide Imaging Using the Scaffold Protein [Tc]Tc-ADAPT6.

Due to its small size and high affinity binding, the engineered scaffold protein ADAPT6 is a promising targeting probe for radionuclide imaging of human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER2). In a Phase I clinical trial, [Tc]Tc-ADAPT6 demonstrated safety, tolerability and capacity to visualize HER2 expression in primary breast cancer. In this study, we aimed to select the optimal parameters for distinguishing between breast cancers with high and low expression of HER2 using [Tc]Tc-ADAPT6 in a planned Phase II study.

A global survey of host, aquatic, and soil microbiomes reveals shared abundance and genomic features between bacterial and fungal generalists.

Environmental change, coupled with alteration in human lifestyles, is profoundly impacting the microbial communities critical to the health of the Earth and its inhabitants. To identify bacteria and fungi that are resistant and susceptible to habitat change, we analyze thousands of genera detected in 1,580 host, soil, and aquatic samples. This large-scale analysis identifies 48 bacterial and 4 fungal genera that are abundant across the three biomes, demonstrating fitness in diverse environmental conditions.

Influence of cardioplegic solution on incidence of delirium after CABG surgery: Use of Calafiore blood cardioplegia versus HTK - Bretschneider - solution in a single-center retrospective analysis from 2017 to 2021.

Background: Purpose of the present study is an evaluation of postoperative incidence for delirium after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). Study addressed whether application of Histidine-Tryptophan-Ketoglutarate (HTK) solution (Bretschneider) or blood cardioplegia (Calafiore) is associated with increased of postoperative delirium cases.

Materials And Methods: In a retrospective, single center evaluation a total number of 273 patients were enrolled in the study from January 2017 to October 2021.

DAnIEL: A User-Friendly Web Server for Fungal ITS Amplicon Sequencing Data.

Trillions of microbes representing all kingdoms of life are resident in, and on, humans holding essential roles for the host development and physiology. The last decade over a dozen online tools and servers, accessible public domain, have been developed for the analysis of bacterial sequences; however, the analysis of fungi is still in its infancy. Here, we present a web server dedicated to the comprehensive analysis of the human mycobiome for (i) translating raw sequencing reads to data tables and high-standard figures, (ii) integrating statistical analysis and machine learning with a manually curated relational database and (iii) comparing the user's uploaded datasets with publicly available from the Sequence Read Archive.

Metabolic modeling predicts specific gut bacteria as key determinants for Candida albicans colonization levels.

Candida albicans is a leading cause of life-threatening hospital-acquired infections and can lead to Candidemia with sepsis-like symptoms and high mortality rates. We reconstructed a genome-scale C. albicans metabolic model to investigate bacterial-fungal metabolic interactions in the gut as determinants of fungal abundance.

Clinical and Ophthalmological Characteristics of Ocular Syphilis in a Retrospective Tertiary Hospital Cohort.

Background: Data on ocular syphilis (OS) and its clinical presentation are currently insufficient. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of a cohort with a high OS incidence at a university hospital in Germany, focusing on the clinical presentation of OS.

Methods: This single-center cohort study retrospectively analyzed data on 90 patients with 109 episodes of syphilis between 2008 and 2018.

Microbial keratitis-induced endophthalmitis: incidence, symptoms, therapy, visual prognosis and outcomes.

Background: To evaluate symptoms, therapies and outcomes in rare microbial keratitis-induced endophthalmitis.

Methods: Retrospective study with 11 patients treated between 2009 and 2014. Clinical findings, corneal diseases, history of steroids and trauma, use of contact lenses, number and type of surgical interventions, determination of causative organisms and visual acuity (VA) were evaluated.

[Endogenous Endophthalmitis: Epidemiology, Clinic, Therapy and Visual Outcome].

Background: Endogenous endophthalmitis is a rare and severe inflammation of the eye in the context of a systemic infectious disease, which can lead to the loss of the affected eye in the worst case.

Material And Methods: In a 5-year period, 20 eyes were treated for endogenous endophthalmitis and evaluated retrospectively. Evaluation parameters were epidemiological data, causes, concomitant diseases, assessment of the pathogen spectrum, therapy and visual acuity.

Synthesis and Free Radical Scavenging Activity of New Hydroxybenzylidene Hydrazines.

Hydroxybenzylidene hydrazines exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activities. Here, we report synthesis and free radical scavenging activity of nine new N-(hydroxybenzylidene)-N'-[2,6-dinitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)]phenylhydrazines. The chemical structures of these compounds were confirmed by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 19F-NMR, IR spectroscopy, LC-MS, and elemental analysis.

Head and neck giant cell arteritis: an autoimmune disease with many faces.

Conclusion: A high rate of infrequent presentations of giant cell arteritis were seen in the ENT department and should be anticipated as a differential diagnosis in every older patient with odynophagia with high CRP values without cause in thorough ENT examination.

Objective: To describe the clinical manifestation of head and neck giant cell arteritis and to derive a diagnostic pathway covering atypical cases.

Method: Single-center, retrospective analysis of cases with GCA in the head and neck region (HN-GCA) (2002-2012) to describe the clinical presentation and to derive a diagnostic pathway covering manifestations presenting to an ENT department.

The Scavenging of DPPH, Galvinoxyl and ABTS Radicals by Imine Analogs of Resveratrol.

Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a phytoalexin produced by plants. Resveratrol is known for its anti-cancer, antiviral and antioxidant properties. We prepared imine analogs of resveratrol ((hydroxyphenyliminomethyl)phenols) and tested their antioxidant activity.

[Posttraumatic endophthalmitis : Complication following severe eye injury].

Background: Posttraumatic endophthalmitis is a rare but another extremely threatening complication for quality of vision, which has already been compromised by the trauma after perforating eye injuries. One of the substantial difficulties is the distinction between posttraumatic inflammation and development of a bacterial infection.

Methods: In a hospital-based study 149 consecutive cases of perforating ocular trauma with open injuries to the eye within a 5-year period were retrospectively investigated.

Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections in cattle are asymptomatic; however, Stx impairs the initiation of an adaptive immune response by targeting bovine peripheral and intraepithelial lymphocytes. As presumptive bovine mucosal macrophages (Mø) are also sensitive to Stx, STEC may even exert immune modulatory effects by acting on steps preceding lymphocyte activation at the Mø level. We therefore studied the expression of the Stx receptor (CD77), cellular phenotype and functions after incubation of primary bovine monocyte-derived Mø with purified Stx1.

[Long-term course of immunosuppressive therapy of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome].

This article describes the case of a 22-year old female patient, who first presented with holocephalic headaches and bilateral loss in vision. After diagnosis of a complete Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome, high-dose corticosteroid therapy was initiated. Due to recurrent headaches 6 weeks later, immunosuppressive therapy was initiated with cyclosporine A.

[Ophthalmological alterations at the initial diagnosis of HIV infection].

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), is one of the most important infectious causes of death in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ocular manifestations can appear in particular when the CD4 cell count is low. This article presents a case report of a 38-year-old homosexual man in whom HIV microangiopathy retinopathy syndrome (MAPS) was found during the assessment of the initial HIV diagnosis.

Potency testing of veterinary vaccines: the way from in vivo to in vitro.

Current quality control of inactivated animal vaccines still focuses on the potency of final products in a batch-wise manner. Animal welfare concerns as well as scientific considerations have led to the '3Rs-concept' that comprises the refinement of animal procedures, the reduction of animal numbers, and the replacement of animal models. Although the 3Rs-concept has been widely accepted as a fundamental principle, the number of approved alternatives for in vivo tests is still limited.

[Loss of visual acuity after treatment with pipamperone].

The butyrophenone derivative pipamperone is a neuroleptic agent administered to reduce psychomotor agitation and psychotic conditions in schizophrenic psychoses. Among other things it blocks D2 receptors in the dopamine pathways of the mesolimbic system and therefore reduces excess release of dopamine in the area thought to control psychotic experiences. Dopamine also takes part in signal transduction in the visual process.

Antioxidative effect of some hydroxy substituted aromatic bisimines.

This work deals with antioxidative properties of some derivatives 4,4'-bis(dihydroxybenzylanilidenamino) diphenylmethanes and diphenylethers, which structure is similar to resveratrol. Four derivatives of above-mentioned compounds were synthesized with hydroxyl (OH) groups in various positions. It was found that derivatives with two OH groups in 2 and 5 positions were very good scavengers of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals in both methanol and chloroform.

Relationship between structure and antioxidative properties of some 3-formylchromone derivatives.

Flavonoids, which generally exhibit very good antioxidant properties, contain the chromone unity. The work elucidates the relation between chemical structure of chromones and their ability to scavenge DPPH radicals. The work deals with antioxidative properties of some hydroxy derivatives of 3-formylchromones (without substituent, 6-hydroxy-, 7-hydroxy-, 7,8-dihydroxy-).

Structure-acidity-IR spectra correlations for p-substituted N-phenylsulfonylbenzamides.

The wavenumbers of the IR absorption bands of the C=O, S=O and N-H stretching vibrations for a series of p-substituted N-phenylsulfonylbenzamides were measured in trichloromethane. The bond orders, Mulliken charges, charge densities and heats of formation were calculated using the PM3 method. Fifty significant mutual mono parameter (MP) and six dual parameter (DP) correlations were found for the IR spectral, theoretical structural data, substituent constants and previously reported dissociation constants in five polar organic solvents.
