Brain removal during a gross anatomy course in medical school serves multiple purposes. It allows for the teaching of cranial vault anatomy, as well as the external brain, cranial nerves, and cerebral vasculature. Techniques to remove the brain while preserving these delicate structures generally damage the overlying anatomy of the dura and suboccipital triangle.

Clinical reasoning is essential to the practice of medicine. Such reasoning involves analytical (deductive) and non-analytical (recall) processes. Non-analytical reasoning is taught extensively in medical schools, and it dominates medical students' time as they review question banks and lecture notes, watch videos online, and memorize flashcards, algorithms, and illness scripts.

The effective use of point-of-care ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of hand conditions is dependent upon a thorough understanding of its anatomic bases. To facilitate this understanding, in-situ cadaveric hand dissections were correlated with handheld ultrasound images in the palm focusing on key areas of clinical relevance. The palms of an embalmed cadaver were dissected, minimizing the reflection of structures whenever possible to emphasize normal relationships and tissue planes.

Cadaveric dissections of the male pelvis are predominately conducted using either an anterior approach with the pelvis intact, or via pelvic hemi-section. The anterior approach leaves more tissue in-situ, but has limited visualization of retropubic structures, such as the prostate, seminal vesicles, vas deferens, and urethra. Hemi-section of the pelvis provides increased visualization at the expense of transecting midline structures.

The third segment of the axillary artery (TSAA) is the main vascular supply to the muscles of the upper limb. Numerous studies have reported atypical branching patterns of the TSAA, which can complicate operative interventions involving structures supplied by this segment of the artery. Our current study evaluated a previously undescribed branching pattern in the TSAA, in which the subscapular artery gave rise to an unusual posterior humeral circumflex artery, and a second subscapular artery.

When learning the Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) exam, anatomical orientation can be difficult, especially in the subxiphoid and upper quadrant views. To facilitate understanding in these areas, a novel in-situ cadaver dissection was used to demonstrate anatomy related to the FAST exam. In situ, because the structures remained in normal positions with adjacent organs, layers, and spaces clearly visible from the point of view of the ultrasound probe.

The parakeet auklet () is a piscivorous seabird with a natural diet of various invertebrate and teleost species, which is challenging to replicate in a managed collection. A high prevalence of early onset cataracts was observed in a managed collection of parakeet auklets at the North Carolina Zoo (Asheboro, NC, USA), which was hypothesized to be related to inappropriate vitamin A and E levels. From 1994 to 2002, these parakeet auklets were offered dietary supplementation comprising Vita-Zu small bird tablets.

A 37-year-old bull African elephant () at the North Carolina Zoo (NCZ) was diagnosed with bilateral cataracts leading to behavioral changes and significant weight loss secondary to functional blindness. On initial examination, a weight loss of 234 kg, a mature cataract in the right eye, and a focal cataract in the left eye were diagnosed. Ultrasound and electroretinography (ERG) indicated normal retinal attachment and both eyes were viable candidates for surgery.

The purpose of the study is to develop and implement a standardized sterile compounding training program in a multihospital system that incorporates sterile compounding best practice recommendations and ensures compliance with United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Chapters 797 and 800 standards. Baseline sterile compounding training data were collected and reviewed for sterile compounding facilities across a multihospital health system, which included 37 distinct sterile compounding operations. Current sterile compounding personnel across the system completed preintervention assessments consisting of a written, knowledge-based exam; media-fill challenge test; and an observed assessment of aseptic technique.

A shelter for trafficked women has unique infection control needs that require a comprehensive infection control plan, balancing the needs of infection prevention with respect for the vulnerable population served. Using a trauma-informed model and evidence from infection control in other shelter settings, a group of senior baccalaureate students developed a program in a short-term shelter for commercially sexually exploited individuals that included a written infection control manual, policies and procedures, and staff training. This partnership between academia and a nonprofit agency was an experiential service learning project in the domain of public health nursing, allowing students the opportunity to apply evidence toward a sustainable intervention for the agency.

Unlabelled: The neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a key player in migraine. Although migraine can be treated using CGRP antagonists that act peripherally, the relevant sites of CGRP action remain unknown. To address the role of CGRP both within and outside the CNS, we used CGRP-induced light-aversive behavior in mice as a measure of migraine-associated photophobia.

Objectives: Accreditation of US dental schools requires a formal system of quality assessment of clinical adverse events (AE). There is no universal system to collect, record, interpret, or release findings or trends pertaining to AEs. The objective of this study was to compare similarities and differences among the AE reporting forms used at US dental schools.

Background: Technological advances enable the cost-effective acquisition of Multi-Modal Data Sets (MMDS) composed of measurements for multiple, high-dimensional data types obtained from a common set of bio-samples. The joint analysis of the data matrices associated with the different data types of a MMDS should provide a more focused view of the biology underlying complex diseases such as cancer that would not be apparent from the analysis of a single data type alone. As multi-modal data rapidly accumulate in research laboratories and public databases such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), the translation of such data into clinically actionable knowledge has been slowed by the lack of computational tools capable of analyzing MMDSs.

CASE DESCRIPTION A 22-year-old male gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) housed in a zoo was evaluated for signs of lethargy, head-holding, and cervical stiffness followed by development of neurologic abnormalities including signs of depression, lip droop, and tremors. CLINICAL FINDINGS Physical examination under general anesthesia revealed a tooth root abscess and suboptimal body condition. A CBC and serum biochemical analysis revealed mild anemia, neutrophilia and eosinopenia consistent with a stress leukogram, and signs consistent with dehydration.

A 2-yr-old female red wolf (Canis rufus gregoryi) sustained a degloving injury to the left thoracic limb while in a display habitat. Initial attempts to resolve the extensive wound by using conservative measures were unsuccessful. Subsequent treatment using a free skin graft consisted first of establishment of an adequate granulation bed via cortical bone fenestration.

Oral squamous cell cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx (OSCC) is associated with high case-fatality. For reasons that are largely unknown, patients with the same clinical and pathologic staging have heterogeneous response to treatment and different probability of recurrence and survival, with patients with Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal tumors having the most favorable survival. To gain insight into the complexity of OSCC and to identify potential chromosomal changes that may be associated with OSCC mortality, we used Affymtrix 6.

To assess the potential for male-mediated drug transfer to their female partner and/or developing conceptus, vaginal uptake of a monoclonal antibody (mAb) biotherapeutic was assessed in cynomolgus monkeys. A human IgG2 mAb (IgG2X; bound human and cynomolgus monkey neonatal Fc-receptor, FcRn, with similar high affinity) was administered intravaginally (IvG; 100mg/dose) to 5 pregnant cynomolgus monkeys biweekly from gestation day (gd) 21 to gd133. In all maternal samples collected before gd119, IgG2X plasma concentrations were below the limit of quantification (BLQ; <25ng/mL).

Understanding species differences in the placental transfer of monoclonal antibodies is important to inform species selection for nonclinical safety assessment, interpret embryo-fetal changes observed in these studies, and extrapolate their human relevance. Data presented here for a fully human immunoglobulin G2 monoclonal antibody (IgG2X) revealed that, during organogenesis, in both the cynomolgus monkey (gestation day 35 [gd35]) and the rat (gd10) the extent of IgG2X placental transfer (approximately 0.5% maternal plasma concentration, MPC) was similar to the limited published human data for endogenous IgG.

Many carcinogens in tobacco smoke cause DNA damage, and some of that damage can be mitigated by the actions of DNA repair enzymes. In a case-control study nested within the Beta-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial, a randomized chemoprevention trial in current and former heavy smokers, we examined whether lung cancer risk was associated with variation in 26 base excision repair, mismatch repair, and homologous recombination repair genes. Analyses were limited to Caucasians (744 cases, 1477 controls), and logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for individual SNPs and common haplotypes, with adjustment for matching factors.
