China's "three-child policy", implemented in response to population aging, has made the protection of maternal and infant health an urgent priority. In this environmental and medical big-data era, the Zhejiang Environmental and Birth Health Research Alliance (ZEBRA) maternity cohort was established with the aim of identifying risk factors for perinatal morbidity and mortality from the perspectives of both observational epidemiology and experimental etiology. Compared with conventional birth cohorts, the inclusion of a maternity cohort allows greater scope for research and places an emphasis on maternal health.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinct malignancy of the nasopharynx and is consistently associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Its unique anatomical location and complex aetiology often result in advanced-stage disease at first diagnosis. While radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy have been the mainstays of treatment, they often fail to prevent tumour recurrence and metastasis, leading to high rates of treatment failure and mortality.

Improving desirable traits of popular rice varieties is of particular importance for small-scale food producers. Breeding is considered the most ecological and economic approach to improve yield, especially in the context of pest and pathogen-resistant varieties development. Being able to cross rice lines is also a critical step when using current transgene-based genome editing technologies, e.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are trying to figure out how to diagnose different types of blood disorders called MDS and MPN, which can be tricky because they have some similar features.
  • They looked at the DNA of patients with different types of these disorders to see how they are different and found specific gene mutations that can help identify each type.
  • The research shows that age and certain mutations can affect how well patients do, and this information can help doctors make better decisions about treatment.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a powerful tool for studying biodiversity in forests and tree canopies. However, collecting representative eDNA samples from these high and complex environments remains challenging. Traditional methods, such as surface swabbing or tree rolling, are labor-intensive and require significant effort to achieve adequate coverage.

A path to sustainably reduce world hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition is to close the crop yield gap, particularly, losses due to pathogens. Breeding resistant crops is key to achieving this goal, an effort requiring collaboration among stakeholders, scientists, breeders, farmers and policymakers. During a disease outbreak, epidemiologists survey the occurrence of a disease after which pathologists investigate mechanisms to stop an infection.

Background: We previously reported that delayed allergenic food introduction in infancy did not increase food allergy risk until age 4 y within our prospective cohort. However, it remains unclear whether other aspects of maternal or infant diet play roles in the development of childhood food allergy.

Objectives: We examined the relationship between maternal pregnancy and infant dietary patterns and the development of food allergies until age 8 y.

Background And Aim: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder with roots in genetic, immune, psychological, and dietary factors. Recently, the potential correlation between environmental exposures, such as air pollution, and IBS has gained attention. This review aimed to systematically examine existing studies on environmental factors associated with IBS, elucidating this interplay and guiding future research.

Melanoma's rare capacity to undergo heterologous differentiation can create significant diagnostic challenges. The molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are not well understood. We present an unusual case of subungual melanoma exhibiting extensive cartilaginous differentiation and provide insights into its molecular and cytogenomic features.

Medical affairs professionals are pivotal players at the intersection of medical innovation and practice in the pharmaceutical industry. They are uniquely positioned to translate complex medical knowledge into actionable insights for internal and external stakeholders. Industry-led continuing medical education (CME) programs, guided by these professionals, hold the potential to markedly improve clinicians' application of evidence-based medicine (EBM) in clinical settings, thereby elevating patient care outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Plant roots have different structures and functions, which might affect how bacteria grow on them.
  • Researchers created two special setups to study different parts of plant roots and found that different types of bacteria live in different sections of the roots.
  • They discovered that certain plant sugars help the bacteria thrive in specific areas, showing how plant nutrients and bacteria depend on each other for a healthy ecosystem.

Article Synopsis
  • Maternal asthma symptoms during pregnancy are linked to increased behavioral and executive function problems in children, unlike paternal asthma symptoms.
  • The study analyzed data from 844 families and found that children of mothers with asthma symptoms displayed more significant issues compared to those whose mothers did not have such symptoms.
  • Results suggest that maternal prenatal asthma affects child internalizing symptoms and executive function, with paternal asthma showing no direct impact on child outcomes.

Background: Most previous research on the environmental epidemiology of childhood atopic eczema, rhinitis and wheeze is limited in the scope of risk factors studied. Our study adopted a machine learning approach to explore the role of the exposome starting already in the preconception phase.

Methods: We performed a combined analysis of two multi-ethnic Asian birth cohorts, the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) and the Singapore PREconception Study of long Term maternal and child Outcomes (S-PRESTO) cohorts.

The naming and labeling of products can affect consumer attitudes and subsequent behavior, particularly in the case of new food products in the market. The present study explores the effects of name framing on consumer attitudes towards cultured meat (CM), which is currently in the early stages of development. With a sample of 1532 Chinese consumers, we integrated several pathways to explain the name-framing effect by examining three different terms ("cultured," "artificial," and "cell-based") for CM.

T(14;19) is an unusual but distinct genomic alteration reported in low-grade B-cell lymphomas. This structural rearrangement places BCL3 in juxtaposition with IGH inducing proliferation and has been found in chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), marginal zone lymphoma (MZL), and other low-grade B-cell lymphomas. While there are some case series describing this in the context of other cytogenetic alterations, there are limited clinical cases examined from a molecular perspective.

One novel strategy to shift food choices in digital shopping environments is to automatically recommend healthier alternatives when an unhealthy choice is made. However, this raises the question which alternative products to recommend. This study assesses 1) whether healthier food swap recommendations are effective, even though the unhealthy choice was made in the presence of visible FOP nutrition labels, and 2) how the similarity of the alternatives influences the acceptance of food swap recommendations.

Background: Weight loss is the most effective treatment for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). There is evidence that the Mediterranean diets rich in unsaturated fatty acids and fiber have beneficial effects on weight homeostasis and metabolic risk factors in individuals with NAFLD. Studies have also shown that higher circulating concentrations of pentadecanoic acid (C15:0) are associated with a lower risk for NAFLD.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinct type of head and neck cancer that is highly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. EBV acts as an epigenetic driver in NPC tumorigenesis, reprogramming the viral and host epigenomes to regulate viral latent gene expression, and creating an environment conducive to the malignant transformation of nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. Targeting epigenetic mechanisms in pre-clinical studies has been shown promise in eradicating tumours and overcoming immune resistance in some solid tumours.

Background: There is no consensus on the effect of timing and type of smoke exposure on early allergy development. This study aimed to determine the relationship between early eczema or food allergy/hypersensitivity development in children by firstly investigating the effect of smoke exposure across critical development periods and secondly by analyzing effects of parental atcive or passive smoking.

Methods: Four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Embase) were searched in May 2022 and assessed by two independent reviewers.
