Background: Postpartum hypertension is a key factor in racial-ethnic inequities in maternal mortality. Emerging evidence suggests that experiences of racism, both structural and interpersonal, may contribute to disparities. We examined associations between gendered racial microaggressions (GRMs) during obstetric care with postpartum blood pressure (BP).

Mucoromycota fungi and their Mollicutes-related endobacteria (MRE) are an ideal system for studying bacterial-fungal interactions and evolution due to the long-term and intimate nature of their interactions. However, methods for detecting MRE face specific challenges due to the poor representation of MRE in sequencing databases coupled with the high sequence divergence of their genomes, making traditional similarity searches unreliable. This has precluded estimations on the diversity of MRE associated with Mucoromycota.

Diverse and complex microbiomes are found in virtually every environment on Earth. Bacteria and fungi often co-dominate environmental microbiomes, and there is growing recognition that bacterial-fungal interactions (BFI) have significant impacts on the functioning of their associated microbiomes, environments, and hosts. Investigating BFI remains a challenge, particularly when attempting to examine interactions at multiple scales of system complexity.

Article Synopsis
  • - Over the past few decades, malaria cases in Cambodia have decreased significantly, leading to fragmented transmission in remote areas, prompting a study to examine the burden of Plasmodium infections near the forest regions in Mondulkiri.
  • - The study involved 950 participants from 2018 to 2020, where blood samples were tested for Plasmodium infections and a risk analysis was conducted. It found that living in the forest greatly increased the risk of infection, particularly in adult males.
  • - Results indicated that baseline serological status (whether participants tested positive or negative) was a strong predictor of future infections, stressing the need for targeted serological testing to effectively address malaria risks, especially in demographics living outside forest areas.

Scleractinian assemblages are threatened by marine heat waves with coral survivorship depending on host genetics and microbiome composition. We documented an extreme marine heat wave in Fiji and the response of corals in two thermally stressed reef flats. Through high-throughput amplicon sequencing of 16S and ITS rDNA phylogenetic markers, we assessed coral microbiomes (Symbiodiniaceae, prokaryotes, fungi, and Apicomplexa) of paired bleached and unbleached colonies of four common coral species representative of dominant genera in the South Pacific.

Background: Primaquine is used to eliminate Plasmodium vivax hypnozoites, but its optimal dosing regimen remains unclear. We undertook a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of different primaquine dosing regimens to prevent P vivax recurrence.

Methods: For this systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Central for prospective clinical studies of uncomplicated P vivax from endemic countries published between Jan 1, 2000, and June 8, 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Early-diverging Mucoromycota fungi, including mycorrhizal types and Mortierellaceae, contain Mollicutes-related endobacteria (MRE), which may have been inherited from a common ancestor or acquired after species separation.
  • Researchers generated and analyzed complete genomes from MRE found in two genera, Linnemannia and Benniella, revealing them to be the smallest known fungal endosymbionts with genetic adaptations indicating a close relationship with their fungal hosts.
  • The study suggests that MRE from Linnemannia and Benniella likely evolved independently after their fungal hosts diverged, contributing new insights into the evolution of these bacterial endosymbionts and their minimal genomes.

As microbiome research has progressed, it has become clear that most, if not all, eukaryotic organisms are hosts to microbiomes composed of prokaryotes, other eukaryotes, and viruses. Fungi have only recently been considered holobionts with their own microbiomes, as filamentous fungi have been found to harbor bacteria (including cyanobacteria), mycoviruses, other fungi, and whole algal cells within their hyphae. Constituents of this complex endohyphal microbiome have been interrogated using multi-omic approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • Peer support can help patients with kidney disease feel better and stick to their treatments, but we don't know a lot about how effective these programs are.
  • Researchers looked at 12 studies involving nearly 3000 patients to see how peer support affects health outcomes like mental well-being and care engagement.
  • Although some studies showed peer support is helpful, more research is needed to understand how to use these programs better in hospitals and clinics.

Research on bacterial-fungal interactions (BFIs) has revealed that fungi and bacteria frequently interact with one another within diverse ecosystems and microbiomes. Assessing the current state of knowledge within the field of BFI research, particularly with respect to what interactions between bacteria and fungi have been previously described, is very challenging and time consuming. This is largely due to a lack of any centralized resource, with reports of BFIs being spread across publications in numerous journals using non-standardized text to describe the relationships.

Article Synopsis
  • As malaria elimination efforts advance, the challenges from certain parasite species are becoming clearer, especially as the proportion of cases caused by these parasites rises in co-endemic regions.
  • There is currently no advanced vaccine for these specific malaria parasites, and only a few candidates are in development.
  • This study screened 342 proteins to find promising candidates for a subunit vaccine, confirming two known protective proteins and discovering at least four new candidates that may offer similar protective benefits.

Background: Though a growing body of research suggests that greater positive psychological well-being in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may be protective, existing brain-gut behavior therapies primarily target negative psychological factors. Little is known about how positive psychological factors in IBS relate to IBS symptoms, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), or adherence to key health behaviors, such as physical activity and diet modification. Accordingly, per the ORBIT model of behavioral treatment development for chronic diseases, we explored potential connections between psychological constructs and IBS symptoms, health behavior engagement (physical activity and dietary modification), and HRQoL in a qualitative study to inform the development of a novel brain-gut behavior therapy.
