Experimental cognitive tests are designed to measure particular cognitive domains, although evidence supporting test validity is often limited. The Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomics test battery administered 23 experimental and traditional neuropsychological tests to a large sample of community volunteers ( = 1,059) and patients with psychiatric diagnoses ( = 137), providing a unique opportunity to examine convergent validity with factor analysis. Traditional tests included subtests from the Wechsler and Delis-Kaplan batteries, while experimental tests included the Attention Networks Test, Balloon Analogue Risk Task, Delay Discounting Task, Remember-Know, Reversal Learning Task, Scene Recognition, Spatial and Verbal Capacity and Manipulation Tasks, Stop-Signal Task, and Task Switching.

Signaling receptors on the plasma membrane, such as insulin receptor, can have their activity modulated to some extent by their surrounding lipids. Studying the contribution of membrane lipid properties such as presence of ordered lipid domains or bilayer thickness on the activity of receptors has been a challenging objective in living cells. Using methyl-alpha cyclodextrin-mediated lipid exchange, we are able to alter the lipids of the outer leaflet plasma membrane of mammalian cells to investigate the effect of the properties of the exchanged lipid upon receptor function in live cells.

This review highlights a key role of the serotonergic system in brain development and in distortions of normal brain development in early stages of fetal life resulting in cascades of abnormalities, including defects of neurogenesis, neuronal migration, neuronal growth, differentiation, and arborization, as well as defective neuronal circuit formation in the cortex, subcortical structures, brainstem, and cerebellum of autistic subjects. In autism, defects in regulation of neuronal growth are the most frequent and ubiquitous developmental changes associated with impaired neuron differentiation, smaller size, distorted shape, loss of spatial orientation, and distortion of cortex organization. Common developmental defects of the brain in autism include multiregional focal dysplastic changes contributing to local neuronal circuit distortion, epileptogenic activity, and epilepsy.

Cigarette smoking has a major impact on global health and morbidity, and positron emission tomographic research has provided evidence for reduced inflammation in the human brain associated with cigarette smoking. Given the consequences of inflammatory dysfunction for health, the question of whether cigarette smoking affects neuroinflammation warrants further investigation. The goal of this project therefore was to validate and extend evidence of hypoinflammation related to smoking, and to examine the potential contribution of inflammation to clinical features of smoking.

Use of cationic lipid vesicles (liposomes) can yield large amounts of nucleic acid entrapped inside the vesicles and/or bound to the external surface of the vesicles. To show a method to prepare asymmetric lipid vesicles (liposomes) with high amounts of entrapped nucleic acid is possible, symmetric and asymmetric lipid vesicles composed of mixtures of neutral (zwitterionic), anionic, and/or cationic phospholipids were formed in the presence of oligo DNA. For symmetric large unilamellar vesicles nucleic acid association with vesicles was roughly 100 times greater for vesicles with a net cationic charge than for vesicles having a net neutral or anionic net charge.
