Gastrointestinal bleeding due to portal hypertension is a major complication in patients with cirrhosis, commonly attributed to esophagogastric varices. However, bleeding from ectopic varices accounts for 5% of variceal bleeding cases and it may occur at lower pressures than esophageal varices. Thus, ectopic varices should be considered in patients with portal hypertension that present with gastrointestinal bleeding lacking evidence of esophagogastric variceal bleeding on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

NHSBT run a Serum Eyedrops programme for the UK, providing Autologous (AutoSE) and Allogenic (AlloSE) eyedrops for patients affected by severe dry eyes. The service is based within the Eye & Tissue Bank in Liverpool.In February 2020 (pre-pandemic within the UK) there were 1052 patients on the programme.

This study was carried out to investigate leakage/transport across the bag material of six outer cryopreservation bags in common use within NHS Blood and Transplant. In order to do this two different leak testing procedures; coloured dye and hydrogen tracer gas, were used. The data obtained show that a coloured dye cannot permeate through the materials both at room temperature and following storage at liquid nitrogen temperature (- 196 °C).

A series of in vitro biomechanical and biological assessments were derived, and applied to paired fresh and banked femoral arteries. Among all RNAs, tRNA exhibits the largest number and the widest variety of post-transcriptional modifications. Modifications within the anticodon stem loop, mainly at the wobble position and purine-37, collectively contribute to stabilize the codon-anticodon pairing, maintain the translational reading frame, facilitate the engagement of the ribosomal decoding site and enable translocation of tRNA from the A-site to the P-site of the ribosome. Modifications at the wobble uridine (U34) of tRNAs reading two degenerate codons ending in purine are complex and result from the activity of two multi-enzyme pathways, the IscS-MnmA and MnmEG pathways, which independently work on positions 2 and 5 of the U34 pyrimidine ring, respectively, and from a third pathway, controlled by TrmL (YibK), that modifies the 2'-hydroxyl group of the ribose.

The primary surgical requirement of skin allografts within the UK is for cryopreserved viable allografts as these engraft to the wound bed and gain a vascular supply, thus providing true wound closure and a superior clinical performance. Consequently the only disinfection treatment the skin receives is exposure to an antibiotic cocktail. However, antibiotic treatment does not reliably decontaminate skin allografts and 22% of cryopreserved skin fails microbial acceptance criteria and cannot be used clinically.

Bone allografts are commonly used in a variety of surgical procedures, to reconstruct lost bone stock and to provide mechanical support during the healing process. Due to concerns regarding the possibility of disease transmission from donor to recipient, and of contamination of grafts during retrieval and processing procedures, it is common practice to sterilise bone allografts prior to issue for clinical use. It is vital that the sterilisation processes applied to allografts are validated to demonstrate that they achieve the required level of bioburden reduction, and by extension that validated models are used for these studies.
