This article analyses the reopening process of countries in Europe and Central Asia after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and provides evidence on the effects of different reopening trajectories and their timing and speed on economic recovery. The analysis indicates that countries that adopted a gradual, staged reopening experienced stronger economic recovery compared with the countries that rushed into lifting the restrictive measures before the pandemic was under control. Postponing lifting the restrictions until after the pandemic's peak was reached has a positive impact on economic activity.

The nutritional status of the child population was simulated under the counterfactual scenario that all children who died in the first three years of life were alive at the time of measurement. The simulations demonstrate that the difference in anthropometrics due to selective mortality would be large only if there were very large differences in anthropometrics between the children who died and those who survived.

We show that the Mdm2-p53 interaction is decreased upon deletion, mutation or acetylation of the p53 C terminus. GLS2 expression is induced in response to DNA damage or oxidative stress in a p53-dependent manner, and p53 associates with the GLS2 promoter. Elevated GLS2 facilitates glutamine metabolism and lowers intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, resulting in an overall decrease in DNA oxidation as determined by measurement of 8-OH-dG content in both normal and stressed cells.

The potential sources of bias include psychological adaptation to ill-health, socioeconomic covariates of health reporting errors and income measurement errors. We propose an estimation method to reduce the bias by isolating the component of self-assessed health that is explicable in terms of objective health indicators and allowing for broader dimensions of economic welfare than captured by current incomes. On applying our method to survey data for Russia we find a pronounced (nonlinear) economic gradient in health status that is not evident in the raw data.

Comparing p53 and p73beta proteins, our data show that zinc chelation by EDTA is significantly more detrimental to the ability of p73beta than of p53 to bind DNA, most likely due to the greater effect that the loss of zinc has on the conformation of the DNA-binding domain of p73. Furthermore, prebinding to DNA strongly protects p73beta but not p53 from chelation by EDTA suggesting that DNA renders the core domain of p73 less accessible to its environment.
