Selenocysteine, the 21st genetically encoded amino acid, is the major form of the antioxidant trace element selenium in the human body. In eukaryotes and archaea its synthesis proceeds through a phosphorylated intermediate in a tRNA-dependent fashion. The 'liver tolerance effect' mediates local and systemic tolerance to self and foreign antigens and has been attributed to specialized resident cells expressing anti-inflammatory mediators and inhibitory cell surface ligands for T cell activation. Non-parenchymal liver cells responsible for the tolerogenic properties of the liver are the resident dendritic cells (DCs), which comprise myeloid as well as plasmacytoid DCs, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs), Kupffer cells (KCs) as well as hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), also known as Ito cells. Photolysis of 1-(3-alkynoxy)-9,10-anthraquinones in deoxygenated methanol leads to moderate yields (35-45%) of 3-alkynals along with the unexpected formation of diacetals. Reaction of these 3-alkynals with Grignard and Wittig reagents occurs nearly quantitatively without rearrangement to their 2,3-dienal isomers.
